Bosch: The Watch Begins — But at What Cost?
The next chapter of Bosch is officially underway, but the start of this new mission could delay the love story fans have been waiting to see unfold.
Duty comes first. Feelings take a back seat.
And this time, the badge might change everything. 👀🔥
Bosch: Start of watch may delay the love story fans have been waiting for The Amazon Prime Video series Boschremains one of the best procedural dramas of the 2010s, and its sequel series, Bosch: Legacy, continued to build on the Bosch universe. Bosch and Bosch: Legacy star Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch, a maverick LAPD detective who later turns private investigator. The upcoming prequel series, Bosch: Start of Watch, will focus on Harry’s early years.
Bosch: Start of Watch will star Shameless’ Cameron Monaghan as Harry Bosch in his rookie cop years. But what many fans were excited to see in the prequel series was Harry and Eleanor’s romance. However, with the latest casting news for Bosch: Start of Watch, it seems that fans might have to wait just a little bit longer to see Harry and Eleanor fall in love onscreen.

The Bosch TV series, as well as Bosch: Legacy and its spin-off, Ballard, are all based on the Michael Connelly book series. The books follow Harry as an LAPD detective. In the first book, The Black Echo, Harry Bosch and Eleanor Wish meet for the first time. But the Bosch TV series took a different approach.

Harry and Eleanor have already married, divorced, and have a daughter by the time Bosch Season 1 begins. Eleanor is no longer an FBI agent but a professional poker player, and Harry and Eleanor’s daughter, Maddie, is in her teen years. The series skips Harry and Eleanor’s early years entirely, focusing more on their relationship after their divorce.
Skipping the romance between Harry and Eleanor in the TV series allowed for the procedural drama to focus more on the cases and on Harry’s work as a detective. Many fans agreed that the lack of any major romances on the series, except for Harry’s brief affair with rookie cop Julia Brasher in Bosch Season 1, helped the show stand out from other crime dramas.
But when the news of a Bosch prequel series broke, many fans hoped to see Harry and Eleanor’s love story finally play out onscreen. They have a tumultuous on-and-off relationship in the books, but their first meeting and case they work together is still one of the best Bosch cases. Sadly, fans will have to wait at least a little bit longer.

Per Deadline, CSI: Vegas star Adriana Guerra has been cast as Rosa in Bosch: Start of Watch. The description of her character includes a mention that “a budding romance with Bosch threatens her credibility.” The introduction of Rosa, who seems to be an original character, might mean that Eleanor won’t be introduced in Bosch: Start of Watch, Season 1.
It’s also possible that the role of Eleanor might be cast later, and she could appear in Bosch: Start of Watch Season 1, but without developing the romance between Harry and Eleanor yet. Eleanor Wish was an FBI profiler when Harry and Eleanor met, and they worked together on a string of bank robberies that turned out more dangerous than expected.
There’s no real source material to follow for Bosch: Start of Watch, as the Michael Connelly novels already feature an adult Harry Bosch, a seasoned LAPD detective, by the time the first book debuted. But there’s enough left out of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy that could serve as inspiration for Bosch: Start of Watch.
Titus Welliver Will Return as Bosch in Ballard Season 2
While many fans are happy to get a prequel series for Bosch, there’s no denying that one of the biggest appeals of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy was Titus Welliver’s performance as the LAPD detective. Luckily, Welliver reprised his role as Harry Bosch in Ballard Season 1, and fans will be happy to know he’ll be back in Season 2.
Ballard Season 2 has already begun production, and Titus Welliver confirmed he’ll return for three episodes as Harry Bosch. Michael Connelly’s universe connects all of his book characters in one major storyline, and Ballard and Bosch work together on many cases. And with the explosive Season 1 finale of Ballard, it makes sense to bring Bosch back to help.
Fans of Michael Connelly will be happy to see there’s a lot to look forward to in the Bosch universe. With the upcoming Ballard Season 2, Bosch: Start of Watch, and even with The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix, there’s plenty to watch, even if fans have to wait for the Harry and Eleanor love story a little bit longer.
