The second season of Netflix’s Wednesday concludes in just one week. Before the Jenna Ortega-led series returns for the final four episodes, Netflix has released a behind-the-scenes featurette that looks at some of the biggest scenes still to come. In the featurette, we see Ortega, co-creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, as well as Tim Burton, and Gwendoline Christie, break down the fact that “everything is bigger” and “everyone is a suspect” in the upcoming final four episodes. In the previously released trailer, the biggest twist came with the return of Christie’s Principal Larissa Weems, who died at the end of Season 1, helping to save Nevermore Academy from Season 1’s looming threat.
Now, Weems returns as Wednesday’s spirit guide after her nasty fall at the end of Season 2, Part 1. At the heart, the series treats itself like a murder mystery, with co-creators Gough and Millar doubling down on the concept in the featurette. The breathtaking scenes still to come look to be slowly zeroing in on a masquerade, which brings everyone together as the mystery finally unravels. Seen amongst the revelers is Steve Buscemi‘s Principal Barry Dort, and Wednesday’s family including her parents, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez (Luis Guzman), and her grandmother, Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley.)
Gwendoline Christie’s Weems Back in ‘Wednesday’ Season 2
As Enid Sinclair’s (Emma Meyers) life continues to hang in the balance heading into Season 2, Part 2, with Wednesday burdened with knowing she may very well be the cause of Enid’s impending demise, her psychic abilities have been on the fritz for the majority of Season 2. The issue has caused tension between Wednesday and her mother Morticia, after Wednesday developed a dependency on a grimoire left behind by Wednesday’s former spirit guide and ancestor, Goody Addams. The trailer for Part 2 revealed Wednesday’s new spirit guide to be Christie’s Weems, a character return that co-creators Millar and Gough say wasn’t actually planned after Season 1. They cite how much fans (and Ortega) loved the relationship between Weems and Wednesday. In an interview with AICHARK, posted to TikTok, Ortega broke down the development of bringing Christie back to the show:
“We had had discussions at the end of Season 1 about – we already knew that we were gonna kill her. So we were saying, ‘Oh man, well, this has been a terrible mistake on our part. How are we gonna undo this? Is there a way we could bring her back?’ I would say, ‘Well, she’s a shapeshifter. Maybe she isn’t dead. Maybe all the shapeshifters, their natural form is [Weems]. Maybe if they all reverted back to their initial state…’ That’s what I wanted. We were throwing out all these ideas, and then the writers came up with her being my spirit guide.”
With Wednesday’s new spirit guide in place, that will hopefully mean a positive turn in her psychic abilities, which could lead to circumventing Enid’s impending doom. Wednesday Season 2, Part 2 unravels that mystery on September 3. Stay with Collider for the latest updates.
