As season 2 of the popular Paramount+ “Landman” drops Sunday, Nov. 16, Southwest Florida fans of the series probably wonder if there’s oil wells in the region.

The answer is yes and here’s what to know about the popular show co-starring Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore and Jon Hamm.

What’s ‘Landman’ about and why it’s popular

Taylor Sheridan, co-creator of “Yellowstone,” wrote “Landman” specifically with Thornton in mind. The Academy Award-winning actor portrays Tommy Norris, a landman for an oil company in the rough and tumble oilfields of West Texas. Season 1 dropped Nov. 17, 2024.

The show’s popularity is primarily for its storytelling, cinematography, fresh setting and superb acting. Hamm, married to Moore on “Landman,” plays Thorton’s boss.

After its premiere episode in 2024, “Landman” laid claim to TV history with a Paramount+ record of 35 million global streaming viewers.

Where is oil in Southwest Florida

Florida is certainly not West Texas. Even so, parts of the state are rich in oil, primarily in the Jay oil field in the western Panhandle near Pensacola and the Sunniland Oil Trend that includes Big Cypress National Preserve, which has been a site for drilling since the 1940s.

Oil companies also own drilling rights off Florida’s coast, in the Gulf and Atlantic Ocean. However, Florida voters in 2018 passed Amendment 9, which banned drilling three miles from the state’s coast.

Florida produces about 630,000 barrels a year onshore compared to Texas’ 5.7 million barrels a day. The amount of field oil Florida has produced has decreased dramatically since the early 1980s, when the state pumped nearly 125,000 barrels per day.

The most recent data shows state fields pumped about 71,000 barrels this past August. Florida ranks 22nd in national oil production, which is less than 1 percent of the U.S. total.

Who owns drilling rights in Big Cypress

The Collier family holds most of the mineral rights under Big Cypress, which Collier Resources Co. manages. CRC oversees more than 800,000 acres of minerals throughout Collier, Lee and Hendry counties, leasing mineral rights and monitoring oil exploration, development and production at three oil fields: Raccoon Point, Bear Island and Sunniland Oil Field.

Sunniland is an onshore oil reserve stretching from Fort Myers to Miami. Humble Oil and Refining Co. in 1943 first discovered oil and, since then, eight commercial fields have pumped oil.

Are any landmen in Southwest Florida

As with Thornton’s Bill Norris character, a landman negotiates deals and trades with other companies and individuals. He or she also drafts contracts and does what’s needed to prepare land for drilling.

It’s unlikely there’s any landman positions in Southwest Florida because there’s fewer oil wells compared to other parts of the country.
