Abigayle Oakley’s Blind Audition Revealed Her “Super Power” & Got an Instant Triple Turn
She’s truly unique. Crooners, belters, and gravelly country singers tend to make up the majority of the Artists who make it past the Blind Auditions on The Voice. But there are always a few special talents who bring their own unique flavor to the competition, and on The Voice: Battle of Champions, Abigayle Oakley proved that being yourself is always the best style.
The 25-year-old Las Vegas native performed on the first night of Blind Auditions and got the coveted 3-Chair Turn, giving her a choice between John Legend, Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson as her Coach. She earned that impressive feat not with overly powerful vocals but with an unexpected, acoustic rendition of “Call Your Girlfriend” by Robyn, which she also played on guitar.
By taking a pop-dance song and turning it into a folk-y indie number, Oakley showcased her lovely head voice and pitch control. The Coaches were smitten immediately, with Levine saying “let’s go” practically after the first note. “Oh, pretty!” agreed Clarkson, with Legend calling her “special.”
The battle was on to recruit Abigayle Oakley. The second you started singing, all three of us were just like, ‘boom, okay let’s go.’ You have a special thing we all picked up on instantaneously,” Levine said in his pitch, adding that he loves the kinds of Artists you might not typically associate with The Voice. “I always hope that someone that does something different can carry the flag for the show. Someone disruptive while also just being so authentic, and that’s what you have in spades.”
Abigayle Oakley’s “super power” had the Coaches fighting for her on The Voice

John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Adam Levine appear on The Voice Season 29 Episode 1.
Photo: Trae Patton/NBCClarkson noted that for someone with Oakley’s particular talents, song selection is especially crucial.
“This is a competition, so it’s really important to think about how you’re going to win strategically, right? The super power for you is definitely that head voice of yours… Please pick songs that [the audience] wouldn’t expect,” she advised, as Levine chimed in, assuming he’d gotten Oakley, “We’re gonna do that.”
Legend pointed out that there’s “always been a lane for an Artist like you that’s more folk-y, more singer-songwriter,” and asked about her family. Oakley comes from a musical background — her mom does song parodies and impersonations — and after Legend noted that he was a musician “because of [his] family,” Clarkson quipped, “I’m a musician because of my family…trauma!”
The Voice: Battle of Champions
The Voice Season 29 is shaking things up, premiering on Monday, February 23 at 9/8c on NBC and streaming the next day on Peacock.
Officially titled The Voice: Battle of Champions, Season 29 features the show’s first-ever three-Coach lineup, putting The Voice OGs Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, and John Legend back in the red chairs for an epic showdown.
The Voice Season 29 will also introduce fresh format updates such as the “Triple Turn Competition” and the “Super Steal.” You also won’t want to miss the exciting return of CeeLoo Green in a totally new role.
Clarkson narrowed in on exactly what works for Oakley, saying her “super power” is that her voice is “broken sounding and sad, which is Joni Mitchell vibes for days.” She pointed to The Voice Season 21 winners Girl Named Tom as an example of Team Kelly taking a folk-y act to the end, and it worked! Oakley ultimately joined the Clarkson squad.
“I adore her voice,” Clarkson said after Oakley chose her. “I thought it was beautiful and she’s very much an artist, so I’m very excited to talk song selection with her.”
See what happens with Oakley next by watching new episodes of The Voice Monday nights at 9/8c on NBC and the next day on Peacock.
