You’re not ready for the sheer amount of fond Potterhead memories you’re about to experience, but we’re gonna drop it all on you, either way.
10. Fred & George Weasley by James & Oliver Phelps
Just like they shared everything in life until Fred’s untimely demise, the Weasley twins share the tenth spot on our list. While they didn’t get much screen time, the notorious troublemakers owned every scene they had and provided an infinite strategic stock of joy and laughter for their fellow Hogwarts students and movie fans alike.
9. Neville Longbottom by Matthew David Lewis
The man we like to refer to as “the most unexpected thirst trap in Harry Potter, ” Neville Longbottom changed dramatically over the course of eight movies. From a shy and clumsy boy, he became a brave and handsome young man who didn’t flinch in the face of Lord Voldemort’s win and threats and destroyed the most-guarded Horcrux.
8. Dobby by Toby Jones
Just to make things clear, Toby Jones doesn’t look like Dobby: he’s a voice actor, and the tennis ball-eyed prop was animated through different means. The bravest of House Elves and the true leader of his people, Dobby was perhaps the most loyal friend Harry Potter had, and he heroically and heartbreakingly sacrificed his life for him.
7. Albus Dumbledore by Richard Harris & Michael Gambon
For movie fans, this one is a constant source of debates about who portrayed Dumbledore better, but it’s not about that. Both Harris’s fairytale and wholesome old wizard and Gambon’s intense and imperious Headmaster perfectly showcased two parts of Albus Dumbledore’s personality — and either way, he’s a fan favorite and the GOAT.
6. Rubeus Hagrid by Robbie Coltrane
Surprisingly, no other Harry Potter character can boast as many dubious fan theories about them as Hagrid. The wholesome, protective, and utterly irresponsible half-giant became Harry’s first guide in the Wizarding World, and even though it was mostly the Golden Trio who kept saving him later and not the other way around, he was a true friend.
5. Remus Lupin by David Thewlis
Few people know that David Thewlis initially missed out on the part of Professor Quirrell, but it turned out to be very much worth it. His Remus Lupin perfectly captured the werewolf’s kind and caring nature, deep pain, and “woe is me” attitude to life. The best DADA teacher in all seven years, Lupin can take all our hearts for a smile.
4. Luna Lovegood by Evanna Lynch
A proud member of the so-called Silver Trio alongside Ginny Weasley and Neville Longbottom, Luna Lovegood didn’t have a single quirk: she was one big quirk herself. While already loveable, Evanna Lynch took Luna to a whole new level, turning this girl with little to no screen time into one of the most beloved movie characters.
3. Minerva McGonagall by Maggie Smith
You don’t need to be religious to recognize that Maggie Smith is an absolute icon, and her performance as Minerva McGonagall was no different. Professor McGonagall took only a couple of scenes to become everyone’s favorite, and year after year, she kept slaying like nobody’s business. A compilation of her scenes is more than enough to make a Potterhead happy.
2. Sirius Black by Gary Oldman
Wildly, almost embarrassingly different from his book version, the movie Sirius Black came out great still — all thanks to Gary Oldman’s charisma. As short as his screen time is, Sirius left us all crying in those scenes that he had, be it his promising Harry that they’ll become a normal, happy family after the war is over, or his dying in the Battle of the Ministry.
1. Severus Snape by Alan Rickman
Like Dumbledore, Severus Snape is an extremely divisive figure in the Harry Potter community, but one thing never changes: he’s always named the most fan-favorite character of the movies. Always. Despite his numerous flaws, Snape is such a strong dramatic character that even if you hate him as a person, you have to appreciate his arc and complexity.
