Hugh Jackman will join his real-life friend Ryan Reynolds in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. However, they met on the set of another superhero film over a decade and a half ago.

Reynolds is reprising his role as Wade Wilson/ Deadpool, making its debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Shawn Levy clarified the upcoming installment isn’t Deadpool 3, Deadpool & Wolverine takes a different direction as it marks Hugh Jackman’s return to the superhero world. However, this is not the first time the two shared the screen together in a superhero film. They co-starred in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which also marked Reynolds’ debut in the genre as a much different Deadpool. The two actors met on set in 2008 and became good friends, and Reynolds just recalled meeting Jackman for the first time during an interview for People.

I was blown away. And I was nervous as hell,” Reynolds told the outlet about his first time on the X-Men set in Sydney, Australia. “I didn’t know anyone or anything about it, I was walking through the trailers, jet-lagged, disoriented, feeling really green and kind of out of my depth, and there was no script to look at. It was just like, what’s going to happen?”

He continues: “And I heard my name, in between these trailers as I was walking. And it was you. Just the fact that you knew my name meant so much to me. And you came over, you gave me a big hug and you said, ‘Welcome aboard.’ ”

In their typical humor, Jackman and Reynolds had some back-and-forth about their recent experience on the Deadpool & Wolverine set. “And I remember the first day of this [movie] and you came, and you did the same thing,” grins Jackman. “You came over and you went, “Steve!” Reynolds replied, “Greg? No, don’t tell me.” Ryan also noted that he learned so much from how Jackman behaved on set, his kindness and familiarity with the crew taught him what it meant to lead.

Hugh Jackman Also Shared His First Memory of Reynolds

The two interviewed each other for the outlet, and Reynolds also asked what he remembered about their first meeting. Jackman shared the same sentiment as Reynolds, which proves why their bond is still strong to this day, and why Jackman came out of superhero retirement for Deadpool & Wolverine.

“It was on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we were outside of Sydney, I remember there were millions of cranes, we were shooting outside, we were meant to be shooting in Africa, and we were out there, and I just remember running into you and I was so, so grateful you were there. I remember being blown away by you being there,” Jackman added. “I was so excited to meet you and so thrilled you were there, and we needed you, I remember that day we absolutely needed you.”

Deadpool & Wolverine comes out in theaters on July 26.
