Deadpool & Wolverine unleashes an avalanche of well-executed and self-referential fan service that breathes new life into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film follows Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) as he struggles to save his universe from utter destruction after the death of its anchor being, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). Unable to resurrect his world’s Logan, Wade instead turns to an alternate-reality version of the iconic X-Man. However, he is disappointed to discover that this is the “worst Wolverine” in the multiverse, who harbors a traumatic history that left him down on his luck and without any friends to pull him out of his rut.
Despite his label as the “worst Wolverine,” this Logan variant gives fans something that they have wanted for over twenty years. Hugh Jackman finally wears Wolverine’s yellow suit in Deadpool & Wolverine, marking the first time that the iconic actor has done so despite playing the character in ten films spanning twenty-four years. The film provides an emotional reason that this version of Wolverine wears his comics-accurate suit when the other doesn’t. Revealed near the end of the film, Logan’s reason for donning the suit helps put his character’s history in perspective, showing audiences why he is who he is.

In Deadpool & Wolverine, Logan’s suit is intricately tied to what happened to Wolverine’s universe, though the mutant refuses to reveal this truth to anyone but X-23. In a heartfelt conversation, Logan reveals that he didn’t wear the suit during his time with the X-Men. He remembers Scott Summers repeatedly asking him to wear the suit, but refusing to honor his request, not wanting to let his teammates know that he cared and wanted to be a part of their family. However, when the X-Men were all killed, Wolverine resolved to wear the suit that he had once hated so much. Now, he refuses to take it off, using it as a reminder of the X-Men he’d lost and how he’d failed them.

Seeing Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in his classic yellow suit after all this time has left many fans wondering how this didn’t happen sooner. Kevin Feige recently revealed why the X-Men wore black leather suits in the original franchise rather than their iconic comics-accurate costumes. The X-Men franchise launched in 2000, long before superhero movies were a popular genre in the moviemaking industry. Superheroes were still considered “nerdy,” making studio executives want to make their characters look cooler to appeal to broader audiences. As a result, cinematic superheroes and supervillains rarely wore their comics-accurate costumes and instead donned what would have been considered cooler suits at the time. According to Feige, the X-Men’s leather getups were inspired by the popularity of The Matrix, which caused studio executives to demand that the mutants wear similar costumes to those seen in the groundbreaking film.
Although later X-Men films attempted to become more comics-accurate in their costume designs, they still only went so far, never fully embracing the source material. However, fans can expect more comics-accurate superhero suits in the MCU’s rebooted version of the X-Men, who are set to make their debut in the next few years. If Deadpool and Wolverine’s beautiful costumes are any indication, longtime X-Men fans are going to be incredibly pleased by the costume designs in the MCU’s next big franchise.

Deadpool & Wolverine kills off a series of characters as both iconic heroes hop through the Multiverse to stop Cassandra Nova and a rogue TVA team.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe was instrumental in changing views on superhero costumes in cinema. While the MCU hasn’t always had the best costumes, recent films have become more comics-accurate in their superhero suit designs–and it has benefited the franchise immensely. After becoming the biggest film franchise of all time, the MCU grew more comfortable in its identity as a comic book-based franchise, leaning more heavily into its source material as a result. This led to some of the most comic-accurate superhero suits in history. Designs like Sam Wilson’s new Captain America suit in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Ms. Marvel’s final look in her Disney+ series, and Spider-Man’s fresh costume at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home all embrace the classic eras of their characters. Now, Deadpool and Wolverine join the lineup of MCU characters who sport their iconic comic looks in live-action.
The MCU’s shift toward comics-accurate suits transcends the franchise itself. The newly rebooted DCU seems to be devoted to superhero designs more closely aligned with their comic book origins. James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie combines several classic looks for David Corenswet’s Man of Steel and set photos indicate that several other iconic heroes will sport similar designs in the film as well. Audiences want to see their favorite heroes sporting their classic comic looks and, thanks to the MCU, they finally will.
