WALLET FOUND IN THE WATER: New Leads in the Disappearance of Jimmy Gracey
A major development has emerged in the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of James “Jimmy” Gracey. Police confirmed Thursday that Jimmy’s wallet was discovered floating in the water near Somorrostro Beach, only a few hundred feet from the Shôko Barcelona, the last known location where he was seen. This shift—from initially thinking the wallet had been left on the beach—has added urgency and complexity to the investigation, as maritime and aquatic units were observed combing the perimeter on Wednesday morning to locate the wallet and gather any potential evidence nearby.
The location of the wallet is significant. Somorrostro Beach sits directly along Barcelona’s beachfront nightlife district, where Jimmy had been out with friends earlier that evening. Authorities are now exploring the possibility that he may have entered the water—voluntarily or otherwise—during the final moments of his disappearance. In response, local police and search teams have expanded operations, deploying helicopters and maritime patrol units across the Olympic Village area. These measures underscore the seriousness with which investigators are treating the potential for involvement of the sea in the case.

Backstory: Jimmy Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student from Illinois, had traveled to Barcelona with friends for spring break. On the night of March 16, he and his companions went to the popular beachfront nightclub Shôko. While his friends reportedly left around 3:00 a.m., Jimmy chose to stay out later and never returned to the AirBnB where they were staying. When he failed to return, he was reported missing.
Spanish authorities quickly obtained closed-circuit television footage in connection with the case, as reported by El Periódico on Wednesday. Footage reportedly shows Jimmy with another individual outside the club, described as a brunette American female. Authorities have not clarified whether this woman was a friend of Jimmy’s or someone he met that night.
Separately, police obtained Jimmy’s cell phone following the arrest of another individual. Inspector Carles Valles-Banus with the Mossos d’Esquadra, Barcelona’s police force, has not released details of the arrest or why the individual possessed the phone, but investigators are reviewing its location history in hopes of tracking Jimmy’s movements. Camera footage from nearby businesses is also being examined, and authorities are interviewing anyone who may have had recent contact with him. Investigators have publicly stated they believe foul play may have been involved, adding a further layer of concern to the investigation.
Friends and family describe Jimmy as responsible, engaged, and well-respected. Cavin McLay, president of Alabama’s Theta Chi fraternity and a friend of Gracey’s who traveled with him to Spain, emphasized his leadership and character. Jimmy served as the fraternity’s chaplain and philanthropy chairman, roles in which he mentored younger members and dedicated significant time to helping others. “We’re keeping our heads up and remaining hopeful that we find him safe,” McLay said.
Family accounts confirm a strong, close-knit background. Jimmy’s aunt described him as a responsible young man and the oldest of five siblings. His uncle, a senior CNN producer based in Washington, noted that Jimmy had planned to return to the U.S. on Saturday and maintained consistent contact with family, playing an active role in caring for his younger siblings. His parents and two uncles are currently in Barcelona, in close contact with State Department officials.
The discovery of Jimmy Gracey’s wallet in the water, combined with CCTV footage and the cell phone recovered from a detained individual, represents a significant step in piecing together his last known movements. Investigators are now focused on reconstructing a precise timeline and determining the circumstances that led to the wallet ending up in the sea. As search efforts continue, authorities are calling on anyone who witnessed activity near Somorrostro Beach, the Shôko nightclub, or the surrounding beachfront nightlife district in the early hours of March 17 to come forward.
The combination of personal belongings, surveillance evidence, and witness accounts is slowly building a clearer—but still deeply troubling—picture of Jimmy Gracey’s disappearance. With families and friends anxiously awaiting answers, every detail remains critical in the race to locate him and determine what truly happened in the final hours before he vanished.
