Lost to Usyk in Riyadh via a split decision
Tyson Fury has been issued a boxing suspension following his tough loss to Oleksandr Usyk. The 35-year-old lost his WBC world title to Usyk in Riyadh via a split decision.
During the eighth round, Usyk appeared to break Fury‘s nose with a powerful punch, and in the ninth round, a devastating left hand from Usyk left Fury staggering and led to a standing count.
Fans were taken aback when the United Arab Emirates Commission, which officiated the match, imposed a 14-day medical suspension on Usyk.
Post-fight medical examinations revealed that Usyk had an impacted tooth implant, ruling him out of action until June 2, according to Fury‘s promoter, Frank Warren.
Despite the heavy blows he sustained, Fury, who is licensed to box in Nevada, received a shorter suspension and can return to the ring from May 25.
The undercard bouts were overseen by the British Boxing Board of Control, who, according to SunSport, were unaware of Usyk‘s brief suspension and did not have any of their doctors involved in the decision. The same applies to Fury‘s suspension, which was only disclosed on Friday.
This situation contrasts with Fury‘s previous experience in 2021, when he received a 45-day ban from the Nevada State Athletic Commission following his knockout victory over Deontay Wilder in their trilogy fight.
These medical suspensions are not expected to impact either fighter significantly as they both take a well-earned rest. However, a rematch is already in the works due to a clause in their contract.
Frank Warren has confirmed Fury‘s intention to activate the rematch clause, with a proposed fight in October back in Saudi Arabia.
