Uncle Fester in Wednesday season 2

Tim Burton’s Netflix series Wednesday takes viewers into the creepy and kooky world of the Addams family through the lens of the titular character, but Burton’s work has long centered on lovable oddball characters. Tim Burton’s best projects are each known for their unusual characters, dark humor, and unique horror elements.

This persona has certainly come through in his positively reviewed series Wednesday, which has been a huge hit with audiences and critics like for the acclaimed director. However, it isn’t his first foray into TV, despite being his most popular. While waiting for Wednesday season 2, part 2, fans of Burton’s works should check out his forgotten short series from 2000 that is equally (and perfectly) strange.

Stainboy Was Tim Burton’s Last TV Show Before Wednesday

Stainboy and Stare Girl

Prior to Wednesday season 1, which premiered in 2022, Tim Burton had not worked in a series format for over 20 years. His last series was a collection of six web shorts from 2000 called The World of Stainboy, but these animated works received far less attention than his current Netflix hit.

The Stainboy character originally came from Burton’s poetry book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories, and he is an odd sort of anti-hero or superhero figure. In the shorts, he works with the Burbank police department to capture other unusual characters, such as Stare Girl and Bowling Ball Head.

The episodes are aptly named for the outcasts in them, and each short ranges from three to five minutes. Despite working with the police, Stainboy himself is an outcast – not unlike Wednesday‘s Nevermore Outcasts – and treated as such by the police chief. While Stainboy does not have any direct relation to Wednesday, the shared existence of the supernaturally-powered outcasts creates some interesting parallels between the two.

Stainboy Is Fantastic If You Loved Wednesday Season 2’s Stop-Motion Animation Sequence

Wednesday season 2 Skull Tree stop motion

Fans who enjoyed Wednesday season 2’s stop-motion animation sequence telling the story of the Skull Tree will enjoy Stainboy. The short clip may have only made up a small portion of Wednesday season 2, episode 1, but it was entirely engrossing. Likewise, for such short pieces of art, the animated Stainboy series tells some entertaining and odd stories.

More than being entertaining, Wednesday‘s Skull Tree clip is perfectly reminiscent of Burton’s earlier animated works, and while Stainboy is Flash animated rather than stop-motion, it carries that same sensibility. The drawing style and the designs of the different characters are very memorable even though they only appear on-screen for a few minutes.

Wednesday season 2, part 2 premieres on Netflix on September 3, 2025 with four episodes.

Stainboy himself is a lovable outcast that audiences will be familiar with from Wednesday. The titular character and the other outcasts he encounters are all incredibly creative, and their strange powers and appearances are something that fans of Wednesday will likely be thrilled by while waiting for season 2, part 2.
