One of the biggest questions going into The Umbrella Academy season 4 is how the Hargreeves and Lila will get their powers back, and the first teaser has now shown how, but there’s a twist. Every season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy has been packed with twists and turns and shocking reveals, but after three seasons of adventures and chaos, the Hargreeves’ story is coming to an end. The Umbrella Academy season 4 has a lot of questions and mysteries to address that have been piling up through three seasons, but one of its priorities will be the Hargreeves and their powers.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 ended on a huge cliffhanger as Reginald’s plans to reset the timeline succeeded, even though Allison killed him before he pulled the lever. The Hargreeves and Lila ended up in a timeline where Reginald and his wife are alive, Allison has her daughter and her 1960s husband, Sloane is missing, and none of them have powers anymore. One of the biggest questions going into The Umbrella Academy season 4 is how the Hargreeves will regain their powers, and the first teaser just showed how, but there’s a big twist.

The teaser also shows Reginald experimenting on the Hargreeves and them training in what looks like a basement at Reginald’s mansion.

The first teaser trailer for The Umbrella Academy season 4 doesn’t give much away about the plot, but it does have some interesting hints at what’s to come. The Hargreeves will get their powers back, but in a surprising and potentially dangerous twist, the key to that will be Reginald. The teaser shows the Hargreeves reuniting with Reginald, with Viktor talking to him about his siblings. The teaser also shows Reginald experimenting on the Hargreeves and them training in what looks like a basement at Reginald’s mansion, where Five is seen using his powers again.

The Hargreeves losing their powers at the end of season 3 made way for many theories about how they will get them back, and the most popular ones were about the marigolds, which were in Reginald’s possession. These are the light orbs that Reginald kept in a jar as shown in season 1, and though they aren’t shown in the trailer, they could still be part of the solution.

Reginald being the answer to the Hargreeves’ power problem shouldn’t come as a surprise given that he’s understood to be the reason why they have powers in the first place, and he was most likely also the one who took them away from them during the timeline reset – what’s surprising is that he’s helping his adopted children after everything he had done to them in more than one timeline and more than once.

Why Is Reginald Helping The Hargreeves In The Umbrella Academy Season 4 (Has He Redeemed Himself)?

Reginald Has Proven That He Can’t Be Trusted

The cherry on top of all of Reginald’s horrible actions against his children was using them (and Lila) to power the machine in Hotel Oblivion so he could reset the timeline, which almost killed them.

Reginald wasn’t a good father to the Hargreeves, focusing more on training them and pushing them to their limits than being an actual parent. Reginald’s ways led to each member of the Umbrella Academy developing different issues, such as Klaus’ substance use disorder. Meeting Reginald in the 1960s during season 2 led him to create the Sparrow Academy with other children instead of The Umbrella Academy, and he gained Klaus’ trust by helping him master his resurrection abilities, only to kill him during the apocalypse so he couldn’t come back.

The cherry on top of all of Reginald’s horrible actions against his children was using them (and Lila) to power the machine in Hotel Oblivion so he could reset the timeline. Doing so was killing the Hargreeves as the machine was fueled by their powers, which is why Allison had a change of heart at the last moment and killed Reginald to save the rest. All this, understandably, raises questions about Reginald’s motivations to help the Hargreeves regain their powers in season 4, and the rescue mission mentioned in the teaser could be Reginald’s plan, too, though for his own benefit.

Another possibility, though one that at the moment seems unlikely due to his track record, is that Reginald has redeemed himself. Reginald’s new timeline might not be what he hoped for or there might be a threat too powerful for him to face it alone, leading him to help and team up with his children for one final mission. Anything can happen in The Umbrella Academy season 4, and it surely won’t lack twists and surprises.
