‘The Diplomat’ Season 4: Netflix Expected Release Date & Everything We Know
Filming on the new season is due to get underway shortly after an early renewal back in May 2025.

The Diplomat season 4 is coming soon to Netflix. Given an incredibly early renewal, the fourth season is set to get back into production before the end of 2025 and if you’re looking for everything we currently know about the future of the political thriller, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s all the news for the show so far and what you can expect.
On our screens now since April 2023, the political thriller has ramped up the stakes in its third season, delivering what might be the most intense season to date. If you’re here, you’ve probably got to the big cliffhanger, and you know plenty more is to come.
When was The Diplomat Renewed for Season 4?
The Diplomat season 4 was confirmed well before season 3’s release. In fact, it was back in May 2025 that the series got a season 4 greenlight, when the streamer confirmed eight renewals as part of its annual Upfront announcements, where it pitches its upcoming slate to advertisers. Other renewals included My Life with the Walter Boys, Bridgerton, and Forever, among others. No additional information about the fourth season came at the time.
Even though the viewership stats don’t particularly matter for the fourth season, the decline from season to season indeed suggests that the show may come to an end in the near future, either with its fourth season or its fifth, if it’s lucky enough to get it. As we covered in our top 10 report on the first week’s numbers, the series has suffered another 14% drop in the season 2 premiere and has fallen 43% from season 1. Of course, the series remains an awards contender for Netflix and continues to pick up a slew of positive reviews, so it might have a bit more life in it.
Speaking alongside the release of season 3, showrunner Deborah Chan said she was excited about season 4, adding, “It’s going to be a lot of fun. We get to the end of a season and I always think, ‘Well, there’s no way that we can do this again.’ And then we dig back into it, and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, we have to keep going.’”
Who’s in the cast for The Diplomat Season 4
For the most part, we’re expecting most of the main cast members to return, perhaps with the exception of Celia Imrie as Margaret Roylin… That means we should see the return of:
Keri Russell as Kate Wyler
Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler
David Gyasi as Austin Dennison
Ato Essandoh as Stuart Heyford
Ali Ahn as Eidra Graham
Rory Kinnear as Nicol Trowbridge
Allison Janney as Grace Penn
Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn
Nana Mensah as Billie Appiah
Michael McKean as President Rayburn
Pearl Mackie as Alysse
Penny Downie as Frances Munning
Miguel Sandoval as Miguel Ganon
Jess Chanliau as Ronnie

Ahead of the release of season 3, trades and Netflix announced that newcomers Bradley Whitford and Allison Janey had already been promoted to series regulars for season 4. “Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off the charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus … it’s an insane bag of candy,” said Cahn. “Our expectations were high, and it blew right past them.”

Post-Production
As confirmed now by Netflix, production on season 4 will begin in the fall of 2025. As we reported, the production start date is currently set for early November 2025, with November 3rd cited. The show is once again expected to split its time in New York and London, and the planned wrap date will be sometime next Summer, with one source saying June 2026 and another saying July.
The working title or codename for The Diplomat season 4 is Thunderstruck.
As for the release date, we’re currently expecting Q4 2026 at the earliest. The series has always been exceptionally good at delivering new episodes, and all three seasons have been released one year apart —a rarity for Netflix titles. If there are any delays, we could easily see it slip into the early half of 2027.

What to Expect from The Diplomat Season 4
Warning: The following section contains spoilers. Proceed with caution!
Let’s recap where Season 3 left us.
As the crisis between the UK and the United States reaches its peak at Chequers, it seems temporarily resolved when drone images suggest the Russian submarine is actually carrying Poseidon, which will be contained. This prompts Kate to propose a diplomatic solution: bury the weapon at sea. Trowbridge agrees, and Kate privately reconciles with Hal. However, that peace is short-lived when Callum quietly reveals the truth: radiation from the submarine is decreasing, indicating that the Russians have taken Poseidon. When Todd suggests that Grace and Hal’s alliance is based on strategy rather than intimacy, Kate finally realizes: the United States stole Poseidon and used her credibility to cover up the lie.
How The Diplomat Is Written: Realism Over Plot Twists
Series creator Debora Cahn emphasizes that The Diplomat is grounded in institutional realism rather than TV shock tactics. The writers’ room focuses on realistic actions someone in the role would take, consulting diplomats, embassy staff, and political historians to ensure authenticity. The show explores characters justifying difficult decisions under pressure, avoiding clear heroes or villains. Season 3 concludes with a quiet political crime rather than a spectacle. Cahn also keeps the story separate from current news or real figures, creating a moral universe that is believable yet allows for critical examination of power without impersonation.

Kate Wyler: The Keeper of a Dangerous Truth
Kate ended Season 3 reconciled with Hal personally, but politically isolated. She now fully grasps the extent of the deception by Hal and President Grace Penn. She was excluded and used, her credibility exploited to promote a lie globally. Season 4 won’t turn Kate into a whistleblower; that would be too straightforward. Instead, she will remain in the series’ signature grey area: within the administration but morally separate from it. She cannot reveal the truth without risking global destabilization, nor can she support the lie without losing her integrity. Once, Kate navigated diplomacy between nations; now, she must navigate diplomacy with herself, straddling conscience and complicity. Season 4 might bring another stretch of tension between Kate and Hal, but if this series has shown us anything, it’s that no matter how much they drift apart, they always find their way back into each other’s orbit.

Hal & Grace: A Political Alliance More Dangerous Than Any Affair
Hal Wyler and President Grace Penn have formed a calculated alliance. Their relationship is based on strategic needs, not personal desire. They orchestrated a covert military operation and manipulated the narrative to safeguard American interests. Hal has transformed from an impulsive operator into a strategist shaping not just policies but the truth itself. Together, they’ve crossed a boundary that no diplomat or president should: they altered reality for national benefit. In Season 4, they will not be adversaries but function as a unified political entity.
Todd Penn: The Ethical Threat No One Anticipated
Todd Penn could be the most underestimated character going into Season 4. Though not a politician and not seeking power, he’s become an accidental witness to a major cover-up. As a biologist, Todd has a sharp understanding of cause and effect and senses when something is off beneath the surface. If Kate is guarding a secret, Todd might take on the role of conscience, which poses a bigger threat to the political machine. He won’t leak information to hurt Grace; instead, he may act to preserve integrity and hold people accountable.

International Fallout: Not War, but Withdrawal
Unlike conventional political thrillers, The Diplomat doesn’t highlight actual international conflicts. The suspension in season 4 arises from the gradual loss of diplomatic trust. Britain will realize it was deceived, and Russia will see its narrative manipulated. NATO, which depends on trust rather than strict treaties, could quietly weaken. The real threat isn’t missiles but becoming isolated. This reflects the showrunner’s belief: true power weakens from within, not through external assaults.
