Netflix’s Emily in Paris is a relatively simple show. It features a girl starting a new job in Paris and making friends and mistakes along the way. With a short run time of 10 episodes per season, and generally 30 minutes per episode, it’s hard to find time to create confusing plot points. However, even a show this simple in premise has plots and characters that just don’t make any sense.

Little has changed during season 2, as there are still a number of confusing things that haven’t been addressed, and new plotlines that make everything even more confusing.

Julien And Emily’s Feud Randomly Disappearing

Julien didn’t get much screen time in season 1, which was a shame as he’s a great character. In season 2, it seemed that he was going to get more of a plotline when he and Emily clashed over conflicting clients. The tension between them appeared like it was going to be a season-long feud.

But while Julien was seen with a number of different clients, it suddenly seemed as if the competitiveness he had with Emily was gone. Neither of them addressed it later on in the season, and it was as if the original fight had never happened.

Camille And Gabriel Getting Back Together

While not everyone agrees that Emily and Gabriel are a great couple, people have just as much doubt about Camille and Gabriel as a pair. Their relationship was clearly doomed due to Gabriel’s feelings for Emily, so it made sense for them to split in season 1.

But, despite Gabriel’s obvious reluctance to be with Camille, and Camille full well knowing that Gabriel cheated on her, the pair still end up reuniting in season 2. It makes sense for Camille to have cut Emily out of her life, but why hasn’t she given Gabriel the same treatment?

Madeline’s Appearance In Paris

The whole premise of the show is set off by Emily’s boss, Madeline, being too pregnant to work in Paris, so Emily has to fill in for her. This already doesn’t make a lot of sense, but then things get more confusing when she suddenly arrives in Paris in season 2, despite being much later in her pregnancy.

Madeline is only meant to be in Paris for a short time, but if she was capable of traveling, surely she could have done Emily’s job from the start? And it almost seems like she’s now too pregnant to fly, so viewers may wonder how she’ll even get back to Chicago.

What Happened With The Leeks?

There are many things that Emily in Paris gets right about working in marketing, but sometimes the work plotlines can get very confusing, as they can seem to meander into nothing. This includes one plotline about a couple that wants to make the leek the next big vegetable. They prove to be a difficult client with wild demands, and Emily seems to really struggle with them.

But then this plotline is suddenly dropped. It seemed like the scene was simply meant to speak on the topic of magic leek soup, but why it was such a large scene that led to nothing is very bizarre.

What Will Happen With Alfie?

Pink Outfit on Emily It’s clear that Alfie is one of the best characters that appeared after season 1, and he and Emily actually had pretty good chemistry with each other. So it’s a shame when Alfie reveals that he has to return to England, putting their relationship on the rocks. However, it’s slightly unclear what actually happens between the two.

They don’t exactly break up, and Alfie still seems to be a front-running love interest for Emily. But suddenly Emily is banging on Gabriel’s door while planning to confess her love to him. So her feelings for Alfie seem very touch and go, and it makes the whole fate of their relationship very confusing.

Sylvie’s Marriage

But perhaps revealing that she has a husband in St Tropez is taking it too far. She never makes any mention of a husband, even though the pair seem to care about each other a lot.

Furthermore, the nature of their marriage is very confusing. Are they still in love? Are they divorcing? It’s hard to tell, and therefore it’s hard to get invested, especially since Sylvie has a major romantic plot with another man this season.

The Cultural Stereotypes

Petra and Emily drinking coffee and walking down the street in a scene from Emily in Paris. The cultural stereotypes were something that didn’t make sense in season 1 of Emily in Paris, and this season is no different. While they slightly ease up on the French and Asian stereotypes, it seems like the writers haven’t fully learned from their mistakes, because they introduce a Ukrainian woman, Petra, whose sole personality is based around her love of shoplifting.

The idea that Eastern European women are inherent thieves is an awful stereotype, and of course, this makes no sense in the show as it is based on false prejudiced assumptions.

Emily’s Wacky Wardrobe

Emilys birthday dress

Clearly, Emily has had some of the best outfits in the show, but that doesn’t mean that they always make sense. Some are just plain wacky, like the giant bow dress she wears for her birthday, or the bucket hat and jacket she wears when shopping with Petra.

Other characters do point out that she dresses badly, but what mainly doesn’t make sense is that Emily doesn’t understand how her clothes are “Amusant,” as Alfie puts it. She is delusional about how she dresses, which in turn makes her seem an even more confusing character.

What Happened With Julien And The Agent?

Gerhardt and Julian standing together at an event in a scene from Emily in Paris.

Julien was given a little more to do this season, but he still wasn’t given a full plotline like many of the other characters. This includes a romantic subplot, as Julien seems like he’ll have one, but this ends up leading nowhere, which makes no sense. It’s also a shame, as an LGBTQ+ romance would be a great form of representation on the show.

At first, Julien mistakenly goes for Benoit, then he has a flirtation with a famous photographer’s agent, and it seems like this interaction could actually lead to something. But ultimately it doesn’t, making fans wonder what the point of this whole scene was.

How Emily And Mindy Afford Their Clothes?

With a costumer like Patricia Field, obviously the show is going to have extravagant outfits. But it just doesn’t match the characters. Mindy may be an heiress, but she has been cut off by her family and works for tips, so it makes no sense for her to have all of her designer clothing.

The same goes for Emily. While she has a much better paying job than Mindy, she can’t possibly make enough to afford all of the Chanel jewelry, Dior bags, and Courreges jackets that adorn her closet. The show is meant to be escapism, but sometimes the costuming actually takes the viewer out of the story.
