We have an update on Marvel Studios’ hunt for a Spider-Man 4 director, including the fact Ms. Marvel and Batgirl helmers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah could be in the running to take charge of a trilogy.
Spider-Man 4 is one of Marvel Studios’ most highly anticipated movies but, as we write this, it has no release date or even a confirmed director (Jon Watts isn’t expected to return after helming the previous trilogy, Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home).
According to Jeff Sneider, Marvel and Sony Pictures are developing a new trilogy together, with the intention being for one director – or a directing duo – to work on all three instalments.
He says it’s unclear whether shooting really will begin this fall because Kevin Feige is taking his time choosing a filmmaker and is fully in charge of the creative process. That bodes well for Spider-Man 4 after it was previously reported he might be a little more hands-off due to having so many other commitments in getting the MCU back on the right track.
We’ve already heard a few different names for the movie, but Sneider makes a point of saying that Feige was particularly impressed with Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s work on Ms. Marvel.
They helmed the premiere and finale of that Disney+ series and also directed Batgirl for Warner Bros. Unfortunately, the movie was scrapped by David Zaslav as part of his cost-cutting measures (resulting in the near-finished blockbuster being deleted, never to be seen again).
Shortly after being fired, the Bad Boys For Life filmmakers shared an email of support they’d received from Feige.
“My friends, I had to reach and let you know we are all thinking about you both,” the executive wrote. “Because of the wonderful news about the wedding (congrats!) and the disappointing news about ‘Batgirl.’ Very proud of you guys and all the amazing work you do and particularly ‘Ms. Marvel’ of course! Can’t wait to see what is next for you. Hope to see you soon.”
Alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya is expected to reprise her role as MJ. Sydney Sweeny is rumoured to be playing Black Cat, while Scorpion and even the Spider-Slayers are all said to have been considered as Spider-Man 4‘s villains. Right now, The Kingpin sounds like a dead cert if social media’s scoopers are to be believed.
In terms of plot details, there have recently been rumblings about Peter Parker donning the alien suit first introduced at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home with Venom expected to appear in some capacity.
As always, stay tuned for Spider-Man 4 updates as we have them.
