‘The Wire’ Actor James Ransone Dies by Suicide at 46: What We Know

James Ransone, the actor best known for his critically acclaimed role as Ziggy Sobotka in HBO’s The Wire, died by suicide on Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

The 46-year-old died by hanging in a shed, records from the county’s medical examiner show. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) responded to the scene and completed a death investigation report with no foul play suspected. Ransone is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and two children, the New York Post reports.

The Context

Ransone’s death marks the loss of a versatile character actor whose two-decade career spanned critically acclaimed television series and major film franchises. His portrayal of the troubled Baltimore dock worker Ziggy Sobotka in The Wire’s second season earned widespread praise, cementing his place in one of television’s most celebrated dramas.

Beyond his acting career, Ransone was a vocal advocate for sexual abuse survivors, publicly sharing his own traumatic experiences in 2021 to help others confronting similar trauma.

What To Know

Ransone appeared in all 12 episodes of The Wire’s second season in 2003, playing Frank Sobotka’s son alongside actor Chris Bauer. The HBO crime drama, which aired from 2002 to 2008, featured an ensemble cast including Dominic West, the late Michael Kenneth Williams, Idris Elba, Wood Harris, the late Lance Reddick, and Wendell Pierce. His character received critical acclaim, with fans frequently citing Ziggy as one of their favorite characters from the series, according to TMZ.

Beyond The Wire, Ransone built an extensive resume in television and film. His HBO work continued with roles in Generation Kill, Treme, and Bosch. His film credits included Prom Night, the Sinister franchise, Tangerine, It Chapter Two, and both The Black Phone films, with the sequel released earlier this year, according to this IMDB page. His final television appearance was in a Season 2 episode of Poker Face that aired in June.

In 2021, Ransone publicly revealed he was a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, posting a detailed account on Instagram describing abuse he experienced from his former tutor in Phoenix, Maryland, in 1992, the Post reports. In his statement, Ransone described how the abuse led to what he called a lifetime of shame and embarrassment, contributing to struggles with alcoholism and heroin addiction.

He reported the allegations to Baltimore County police in March 2020, but prosecutors told him that they had no interest in pursuing the matter further, according to his email account reported by the Post. The Baltimore County State’s Attorney Office ultimately did not bring charges following the police investigation, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Ransone had been sober since 2006, getting clean at 27 after five years of heroin use. In a 2016 Interview Magazine profile, he discussed his recovery journey, noting that he got sober several months before filming Generation Kill.

Following his death, his wife Jamie posted a fundraiser for the National Alliance on Mental Illness in her social media profile.
