Rob McElhenny as Mac looking shocked in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Rob McElhenney is the latest star to have a confirmed role in Deadpool & Wolverine, which Ryan Reynolds has kept secret for fear of the “Marvel drone.” Best known for his role as Mac in It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, McElhenney has recently been making waves alongside Reynolds with their docuseries, Welcome to Wrexham on Disney+ and Hulu. Since buying the Wrexham Football Club together, the two actors have had a close working relationship, which is why McElhenney being in the Deadpool & Wolverine cast isn’t too surprising.

It was during the latest episode of Welcome to Wrexham that Ryan Reynolds confirmed that he promised McElhenney a role in Deadpool & Wolverine without divulging any more details, joking that he was being followed by a “Marvel drone.” The two were depicted on-set in the Welcome to Wrexham sequence, though everything except their faces is censored – as is Reynolds’ description of the scene to McElhenney. It is difficult, of course, to discern how much is played for laughs – but there is a pretty good hint as to which Deadpool & Wolverine character McElhenney will be portraying.

What Rob McElhenney’s Deadpool & Wolverine Role Could Be

Welcome To Wrexham May Have Already Revealed It

With the plethora of cameos theorized and confirmed to be appearing in Deadpool & Wolverine, there is hardly much room for McElhenney to feature in more than a minor cameo role. This is certainly what Reynolds suggests in the Welcome to Wrexham scene, where a sequence featuring TVA agents from the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer is played out, with Reynolds stating that McElhenney could be any one of them. This sequence occurs as McElhenney sits in an oversized jacket in Reynolds’ trailer, hiding his costume underneath.

Despite this, a TVA logo is visible beneath McElhenney’s coat, suggesting that he is playing a TVA agent with a helmet obscuring his face. This would make sense as it doesn’t look like McElhenney spent more than one day on set, which is all it would likely take to have him killed off by either Deadpool or Alioth. It is also possible that Reynolds and McElhenney are purposely attempting to throw viewers off the scent – though the fact that there is no buzz around McElhenney’s involvement makes this less likely.

More substantial and substantiated cameos include appearances from superhero actors of yesteryear, including Jennifer Garner’s Elektra. Other erstwhile X-Men actors have been confirmed via trailer footage, which includes Aaron Stanford’s Pyro and Kelly Hu’s Deathstrike. With that in mind, even if McElhenney doesn’t portray a TVA agent in Deadpool & Wolverine, it is likely an incredibly minor cameo.
