Ryan Reynolds with Deadpool

Ryan Reynolds will return as Wade Wilson/ Deadpool for the fourth time and the third time as a lead character. With Deadpool & Wolverine set to premiere later this month, Reynolds addressed what future he sees for his character.

In a joint interview with Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy for Variety, the lucky trio discussed the upcoming film, Jackman’s return to Wolverine, and what’s next for Deadpool and Wolverine, now that the characters are finally making their MCU debut. While many details about the plot are currently under wraps, Reynolds’ Deadpool will get help from a variant of Jackman’s Wolverine to help him save his planet. On top of that, there will be several characters that are expected to make cameos.

Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to break many records at the box office, if the film’s initial numbers are anything to get by. The film is predicted to open between $160 million and $165 million domestically, with the highest opening weekend of 2024. That will also lead to the biggest opening ever for an R-rated film, more than 2016’s Deadpool, with $133.7 million. But what is next for Deadpool?

I don’t know,” Reynolds replied about how much longer he’ll play the character. “I could see any version of it. I can imagine a solo movie, being part of an ensemble. I can imagine that this is also the last time. I never feel anything other than that.

As for the possibility for him to join the Avengers now that Deadpool is part of the MCU, Reynolds & co played coy. “I don’t know. Yeah, we’ll see. Yeah,” the actor said. Jackman jumped in, noting, “Clearly, this is our first major interview of this press tour. I’m not sure how to answer.” Director Shawn Levy promised, “We’re going to get a far more packed and evasive answer for all future interviews.”

Ryan Reynolds Previously Teased an Appearance in Avengers 5

Little is known about the future of the Avengers, as Avengers 5 still has to connect some dots. With Deadpool now part of the MCU, it would be easy for Reynolds to finally make his appearance next to the many superheroes in the famous saga.

A couple of weeks ago, Reynolds teased Avengers 5 with a looping video showing the blue-colored Avengers flag waving in the wind. The flag also had an anarchist symbol sprayed on top, but Reynolds didn’t clarify what it meant. With Deadpool & Wolverine being the only MCU film in 2024, the film might hold the key to the future of the Avengers, as it might reveal what comes next, especially since director Shawn Levy is reportedly in talks to helm the movie.

Deadpool & Wolverine comes out in theaters on July 26.
