Andy fights for humanity in a battle 500 years in the making.
The Old Guard lives forever, so it’s no surprise that we have a sequel, which you can watch now, only on Netflix. The saga of Andromache of Scythia, aka Andy (Charlize Theron), and her team of immortal mercenaries first stormed up the Netflix charts in the summer of 2020, and The Old Guard 2 reunites the undying warriors on an all-new mission that introduces an enigmatic new villain, resurfaces Quyhn (Veronica Van) from the bottom of the ocean, and serves up adrenaline-pumping stunts, including one that required Theron to hang from a helicopter.
“The action sequences that we accomplished in the first Old Guard film were really celebrated,” Theron tells Tudum. “So the first thing we looked at was: How can we raise that bar?” She says, “There’s something for everyone in this movie: Fans who loved the first film, fans who love the original graphic novels — and brand-new fans who are looking for insane action, grounded and relatable characters, gorgeous locations, and a global cast of superstars.”
“We’re going to meet some brand-new characters,” Theron adds. “Quyhn is back and her story continues, and we’re all excited to have Uma Thurman and Henry Golding join us as two key new players in the Old Guard universe. Andy and her warriors are back with a renewed sense of purpose. The stakes are even higher now that Andy is mortal and can die — but that certainly won’t keep her out of the action.”

What is The Old Guard 2 about?
Andy (Charlize Theron) and her team of immortal warriors are back, with a renewed sense of purpose in their mission to protect the world. With Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) still in exile after his betrayal, and Quynh (Veronica Van, formerly Veronica Ngô) out for revenge after escaping her underwater prison, Andy grapples with her newfound mortality as a mysterious threat emerges that could jeopardize everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years. Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli) and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) enlist the help of Tuah (Henry Golding), an old friend who may provide the key to unlocking the mystery behind immortal existence. Directed by Victoria Mahoney, and also starring Uma Thurman, The Old Guard 2 is an emotional, adrenaline-pumping sequel, based on the world created by Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernandez.
“We ended the first film with some radical changes to the status quo,” Rucka tells Tudum. “Andy’s mortality has mysteriously left her, Nile has become immortal and joined the group, and Booker’s been punished for his sins by being sent into exile, which is pretty much the worst thing you can do to people who live for hundreds and hundreds of years.”
Fans may recall that The Old Guard ends with Copley sharing proof of Andy and her crew’s positive impact on the world. Based on that information, she’s determined to use what time she has left for good. “We come into The Old Guard 2 with Andy on a mission, and one of the questions the second film raises is the legitimacy of that mission,” Rucka says. “What I find most fascinating about these immortal characters is that fundamentally, they all face the same questions we do: ‘What am I doing here? What is the purpose of my life?’ ”
Only one thing’s for certain — the action will be bigger and bolder than ever, and The Old Guard 2 will take you to places you’ve never seen before. “My mandate every time we went out the door to scout was, ‘I do not want to visit any locations, routinely seen as an audience member in a number of my favorite films,’ ” director Victoria Mahoney told Netflix. “I relentlessly pushed toward the unexpected”

Did Charlize Theron perform her own stunts for The Old Guard 2?
Yes, when possible, and with intention. “Whatever I can find that I feel like I can deliver on, I do it because, to me, a lot of physical action is narrative,” Theron tells Tudum. “It’s telling a story with your body, and it reminds me of dance.”
Theron takes on action and stunts as part of her discovery of the character. “I personally don’t know how to play a character who is a great fighter without trying to be as good as a fighter as I can be,” she says, “because that’s really at the core of who Andy is.”
Fight coordinator and choreographer Georgi Manchev has high praise for Theron’s commitment to the role. “She is a Spartan warrior,” he says. “She has real strength and character. From the first time she came to train with us, she was pushing herself. We started simple with some punches and boxing, and then went for some rolls on the ground, and jumping over objects. Then we started trying different kinds of weapons. She’s unstoppable.”
And as for that finale scene: It was the culmination of a constant challenge from The Old Guard 2 team to pump up the volume. “We really needed it to be a crescendo, because it’s a standoff between me and the goddess Uma Thurman, who plays Discord,” Theron says. So we had to make sure that it was worthy of her, and so some helicopters were brought in.”

Can I see a trailer for The Old Guard 2?
Yes! Watch above as Andy and the crew face off against a new (but very old) foe: Discord, the very first immortal, played by Uma Thurman.
Who wrote and directedThe Old Guard 2?
Victoria Mahoney is directing The Old Guard 2. “During the pandemic, there were a couple of projects I found myself watching and rewatching for a number of reasons, and The Old Guard was one of them,” she said. “There was this beautiful array of characters that had a global sense of appeal with this fusion of drama and action. I couldn’t believe this caliber of actors in one bundle. I wanted desperately to explore their ability to chase story beats inside of action beats.”
Mahoney was handpicked by J.J. Abrams to direct second unit in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. She made her directorial debut with the Golden Bear–nominated feature Yelling to the Sky. She has directed episodes of The Morning Show, Lovecraft Country, You, and most recently, the SUITS LA pilot. Greg Rucka, who wrote the first installment as well as the graphic novels on which the movies are based, is co-writing The Old Guard 2 with Sarah L. Walker.

Who’s in the cast of The Old Guard 2?
Charlize Theron as Andromache of Scythia, who has lost her immortality but isn’t letting that get in the way of taking down enemies.
KiKi Layne as Nile, the newest immortal to join up with Andy and the team, who still hasn’t grasped the full extent of her power.
Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Andy’s former right hand, who’s languishing in exile after betraying his comrades in the first film.
Marwan Kenzari as Joe, the empathetic warrior who strives to keep the group together. To prep for the film, Kenzari and Luca Marinelli sat together and improvised the backstory of their characters’ relationship. “Because of that three-hour improvisation, I had so many backstory scenes of their lives together that I had shot in my mind, and I could simply pull from that,” Kenzari tells Tudum.
Luca Marinelli as Nicky, Joe’s beloved partner, who’s fought alongside Andy’s army for centuries. “In this movie, it was really good to think about how you don’t have to be immortal to be experiencing something that is immortal — such as Joe and Nicky’s love,” says Marinelli.
Veronica Van (formerly Veronica Ngô) as Quynh, who’s emerged from five centuries of torture at the bottom of the ocean with a burning desire to track down Andy.
Henry Golding as Tuah, a new immortal character introduced in The Old Guard 2. He maintains a library of immortal history and lore.
Uma Thurman as Discord, one of the oldest immortals and a mysterious agent of chaos who goes blade to blade with Andy.
Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley, the intelligence agent who has now become a trusted member of the team. “Copley’s really embedded with them and feels like a part of the gang,” says Ejiofor. “He’s not immortal, but he sometimes acts as if he thinks he is. They’re rubbing off on him a little bit.”
Nearly the entire cast of the original Old Guard are reprising their roles in the sequel, although all of their characters have evolved in the six months following the events of the first film. “In the first film, Nile is the newbie. She doesn’t know anything, she is asking a lot of questions,” Layne tells Tudum about her character’s evolution. “In the second film, she’s still asking questions — that’s just who she is, she’s a very curious person — but she’s found her place within the team. We get to witness the things that she may have learned from the team over the months: new skills, new weapons.”
Though The Old Guard often finds Nile and Andy at odds, that dynamic shifts in The Old Guard 2 as Nile takes her place as an immortal in the group.
Layne was beyond excited to reunite with Theron on the film. “Working with Charlize is a dream come true,” she says. “I’m a young actress who is seeking to do more action films, so to work alongside someone who has opened the doors for women in action, I just learn so much from watching her. The things that she understands about storytelling and making a film are incredible. We’ll show up, and she is digging into the script. She is finding ways to make adjustments to make the story stronger and to make it deeper and more meaningful. If I can get a little bit of that gift, I’m going to be all right in my career.”

Joining the reuniting cast are Thurman and Golding. The latter plays Tuah, an enigmatic figure who has been researching the immortals. Golding brought his own personal background to the character, even going as far as helping to name him.
“When Victoria Mahoney and I had our first Zoom call, we went over the character, and originally we didn’t have a name for him,” Golding tells Tudum. “That came a little bit later because Vic really wanted to know who I was, and how this character could represent parts of my life. In the end, I suggested his character be called Tuah, which in Malaysian means ‘luck.”
Thurman plays Discord, an immortal who’s even older than Andy and is out for revenge against all humans — and the Old Guard who protect them. “Discord is shrouded in mystery throughout the movie,” Thurman says of her character. “She’s an immortal. It turns out that she’s one of the earliest and possibly the oldest immortal, and she’s surfaced after hundreds of years. As one of the oldest immortals, she’s been alone the longest and has come back with a lot of angst and frustration in her motivation — not a great fan of humanity, very unlike the movie’s hero, Andy.”Learn more about Discord here.
“Finding two new cast members in Uma and Henry brought a breath of fresh air,” Theron tells Tudum. “They’re just phenomenal actors. We were so lucky to get the two of them because they bring such a different element to The Old Guard 2. Uma is very formidable and you just can’t take your eyes off her. Her character is a real enigma of the Old Guard team — what she would probably call her mission, her purpose in life is very much in conflict with the OG team. These films are surrounded with that question of, ‘What is your purpose?’ When purpose differs, is it good, is it bad? How do you utilize it? Uma’s character, Discord, is a great example of that kind of conflict. Henry brings a sense of nobility to this that we haven’t really seen, because the Old Guard team live out of a backpack and they’re just on to the next mission, and God knows if they even shower. Henry showed up with this beautiful, nobility and wisdom that served the character Tuah really well. He holds so much mystery and long-lived secrets of the Old Guard. Tuah’s a character that brings real perspective on how long our immortals have been around. I can’t imagine anyone else but Henry playing this part.”
Can I watch a clip from The Old Guard 2?
Yes. A clip from the film premiered at IGN Fan Fest on June 7, and you can watch the thrilling moment right here on Tudum.
The footage shows a tense reunion between Andy and fellow immortal and former Quyhn (Veronica Van), who’s out for revenge after spending 500 years repeatedly drowning, trapped in an iron maiden at the bottom of the ocean. “I remember the woman I gave that necklace to, a long time ago,” Quyhn tells Andy. “And you’re not her.” It clearly won’t be smooth sailing for these two warriors.
“We pick up with Quynh right where we left her in the last film,” Van (formerly Veronica Ngô) tells Tudum. “For her, the most cruel thing about being underwater for so long is seeing that everybody moved on. When she comes back to search for Andy after 500 years, she’s carrying so much emotion: missing, loving, longing, hatred, betrayal.” All those emotions come through in the one-minute sequence, which also teases The Old Guard 2’s commitment to exhilarating and dramatically-grounded stunts.
