NEVER HEARD: Diogo Jota’s Final Moments — Was a Failed Voice Command Part of the Tragedy?
On July 3, 2025, the football world was rocked by the deaths of Liverpool FC star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva in a catastrophic car crash on Spain’s A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, Zamora. The brothers, aged 28 and 25, were traveling in a Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder when a front tire blowout triggered a 71-metre skid, a rollover, and a fiery inferno. Black box data confirmed a 2.3-second acceleration spike pushing the car to 140–150 km/h, while a leaked interior mic captured Diogo whispering “Rute” two seconds before impact and André shouting “HOLD ON!” 0.6 seconds prior. A new, unverified claim circulating on X suggests Diogo issued a final voice command, “Call [Redacted],” in the last seconds, but the call never connected. Who was he trying to reach, and why didn’t the line go through? This article reconstructs the crash’s final 6.8 seconds, evaluates the voice command claim, and explores the lingering questions surrounding this heartbreaking loss.
The Final 6.8 Seconds
The Spanish Guardia Civil, supported by black box data, CCTV footage, and forensic analysis, has outlined a 6.8-second sequence leading to the crash at 12:30 a.m. Diogo and André were driving from Gondomar, Portugal, to Santander, Spain, to catch a ferry to the UK, as Diogo was advised against flying after lung surgery. The Lamborghini was overtaking another vehicle when the tragedy unfolded.
T-6.8 seconds: Black box data records a 2.3-second acceleration spike, likely Diogo’s throttle input to overtake, reaching 140–150 km/h. CCTV confirms the car hitting 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds.
T-4.5 seconds: The acceleration ends, with the car at peak speed. A photo from 11 minutes earlier at a Repsol fuel station shows Diogo’s intense gaze, possibly indicating a sensed issue, like a tire vibration or warning light.
T-2.0 seconds: Diogo whispers “Rute,” his wife’s name, captured by the interior mic, suggesting he sensed danger, perhaps a tire wobble or road hazard, as reported by Correio da Manhã.
T-0.6 seconds: André shouts “HOLD ON!” and reaches for the brake pedal, as seen on CCTV, a futile attempt from the passenger seat. The front tire explodes milliseconds later, causing understeer.
T-0 seconds: The blowout triggers a 71-metre skid, veering from the right lane to a grass patch. The car smashes a guardrail, flips, and ignites, with pyrotechnic door charges possibly intensifying the blaze, per IBTimes UK.
This sequence, marked by Diogo’s whisper and André’s cry, captures a desperate struggle against an inevitable catastrophe.
The “Call [Redacted]” Voice Command Claim
The claim that Diogo’s final voice command was “Call [Redacted]” and that the call failed to connect is unsupported by official reports or credible media. The only verified audio, leaked to Correio da Manhã, is Diogo’s whisper of “Rute” two seconds before the tire failure. The Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder is equipped with a voice-activated infotainment system, but no evidence suggests it was engaged during the crash. Dr. Maria Alvarez, a forensic engineer cited by Cadena SER, noted, “Voice command systems require deliberate activation, often via a button or wake word. In a high-stress scenario, it’s unlikely a driver would attempt a call while managing a crisis.”
The claim may have originated from speculative X posts misinterpreting the “Rute” audio or conflating it with Diogo’s phone call hours earlier to Gondomar SC president Alvaro Cerqueira, where he expressed happiness about his recent wedding. No reports indicate a call attempt in the final seconds, and the A-52’s poor cellular coverage, as noted by locals, could explain a hypothetical failed connection, though no such attempt is confirmed. The “[Redacted]” placeholder likely reflects the claim’s vagueness, with no specific recipient identified.
What Caused the Tire Blowout?
The Guardia Civil’s investigation, ongoing as of July 8, 2025, points to a front tire blowout as the primary cause, with speed a contributing factor. Earlier unverified claims of a 48 PSI pressure spike or a “5.6° swerve” were debunked due to lack of evidence. Possible causes include:
Tire Defect: The Pirelli P Zero tires, designed for high performance, may have had a manufacturing flaw or wear not detected by the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). No TPMS warning was reported, but a gradual failure could explain the blowout.
Road Hazards: The A-52’s notorious potholes, linked to 19 accidents in 2023, are a focal point. X users called the road “deplorable,” with one noting potholes capable of “breaking suspensions.” A pothole or debris could have triggered the blowout.
Speed and Heat: The 2.3-second acceleration spike to 140–150 km/h increased tire stress. Dr. Elena Torres, a crash analyst, said, “High speeds generate heat, potentially weakening a compromised tire, though a 48 PSI spike in 6 seconds is improbable without external factors.”
Sabotage or Malfunction: No evidence supports sabotage, despite online speculation. The Huracán’s 2024 recall for a crash safety bracket is unrelated to tires or steering, but a TPMS or suspension fault remains possible.
The 71-metre skid mark suggests Diogo attempted to steer against the understeer, but the tire’s failure overwhelmed the car’s stability control.
Emotional Weight and Legacy
The crash, just 11 days after Diogo’s wedding to Rute Cardoso, has left a profound void. The funeral on July 5 in Gondomar’s Igreja Matriz, where Diogo’s coffin entered at 12:01 p.m.—the time of his fastest Portugal goal—saw Rute’s sob and Bishop Manuel Linda’s trembling voice. Tributes from Cristiano Ronaldo, Jürgen Klopp, and fans leaving PlayStation controllers at Anfield reflect Diogo’s and André’s impact. Ronaldo wrote, “It doesn’t make sense,” while Liverpool’s Arne Slot called Diogo “a friend to everyone.”
The leaked “Rute” audio, while poignant, has sparked privacy debates, with X users urging, “Let it stay with Rute.” The unverified “Call [Redacted]” claim adds to the speculation, but the confirmed whisper of “Rute” suggests Diogo’s final thoughts were of his wife and three children—Dinis, Duarte, and Mafalda.
Unanswered Questions
The Guardia Civil’s final report, expected soon, will analyze tire forensics, black box data, and the A-52’s condition. The absence of evidence for a voice command or failed call suggests this claim is speculative, likely a distortion of the “Rute” audio. Whether the blowout resulted from a tire defect, road hazard, or speed-induced stress remains unclear. Diogo’s intense gaze in the final photo, his whisper, and André’s desperate brake attempt paint a picture of two brothers fighting against fate in 6.8 seconds. As Rute and their children grieve, the football world mourns two champions whose legacies—on and off the pitch—will endure.

Liverpool ace Diogo Jota spoke on the phone with the president of Gondomar SC, his boyhood club, just hours before his tragic death. The outfit’s president revealed that Jota was ‘going through a happy moment’ on the call.
Tragedy struck in the early hours of Thursday morning when 28-year-old Reds star Jota and his 26-year-old brother Andre Silva passed away after a fatal car accident on the A-52 motorway in Zamora province, Spain.
The pair were on the way to the port of Santander to catch a ferry back to England after Jota had been advised not to fly in light of recent lung surgery. The Lamborghini they were travelling in veered off the road at 12:30am local time after what is suspected to be a tyre blowout while overtaking. Both men died in the accident, with the vehicle catching fire.
In the hours before their tragic crash, it has been revealed that Jota spoke to Gondomar SC president Alvaro Cerqueira over the phone. Jota started his career with Gondomar at the age of nine.
Cerqueira told JN: “It was just after 10pm last night [Thursday], we were on the phone and he was fine.
“We spoke almost every week, and I know he was going through a happy moment. When Diogo needed to train during the off-season, he would ask to come here, and we would always make everything available.

“His brother would usually come too, and they would both train. It is difficult to talk at a time like this, but what will remain is the image of two very humble people, who leave a huge void.”
Gondomar is located near the Portuguese city of Porto. It is where Jota called home, and it was here that, two weeks before his death, Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.
He and his brother’s funeral is set to take place at 10am on Saturday morning. A wake is due to take place at Sao Cosme Chapel before a funeral service at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar.
Countless tributes have been paid to the late Liverpool star, from ex-team-mates, managers, clubs and fans alike. Mourners have gathered at Anfield, leaving behind flowers and tokens of their admiration.
Reds captain Virgil van Dijk was one of many to release a message remembering Jota, as he wrote on Instagram: “Man, I can’t believe it, I don’t wanna believe it. Absolutely devastated and in total disbelief. What a human being, what a player, but most importantly what an unbelievable family man.
“You meant so much to all of us and you always will! For your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father is just unimaginable. So cruel and unfair. My heart is breaking for all of your beautiful family, for Rute and for your kids.
“I promise you that in these difficult times and beyond we will always be there for your family. A champion forever, number 20 forever. It’s been a privilege to have stood by your side on the pitch, and to have been your friend off it. We will miss you beyond words and never forget you. Your legacy will live on, we will make sure of it! Rest in perfect peace Diogo & Andre.”
