The first poster for Moana 2 has been revealed ahead of the trailer’s release.
A new poster has been released for Moana 2. It teases a nes sneak peek look at the sequel ahead of the release of the trailer, which will be arriving this week.
The poster was shared by Disney Animation on Tuesday. It was announced that the new trailer will be released on Wednesday, May 29, which will unveil the first footage of the animated film. For now, a new look can be seen in the new poster, which cleverly features the number “2” with Moana seen on the beach in the background. The film will hit theaters on Nov. 27, 2024, and the new poster can be seen below.
The sequel is written and directed by David G. Derrick Jr., and it brings back voice actors Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Dwayne Johnson (Maui), and Alan Tudyk (Heihei). Johnson recently shared an Instagram post featuring images taken from the recording booth to share that he’d finished with his lines for Maui. Johnson will also be playing a live-action version of Maui in a separate Moana remake that starts filming later this year.
According to an official synopsis from Disney, Moana 2 “takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
Moana 2 was announced by Disney in February. It came as a surprise, as the follow-up to Moana was originally planned to be a Disney+ series. During development, the plans were changed to instead develop the story as a feature film to be released in theaters. Disney CEO Bob Iger said this was because of the impressive quality of the project coupled with the continued popularity of the first movie on Disney+.
Moana 2 Was First Planned as a Series
“We were impressed with what we saw, and we knew it deserved a theatrical release,” Iger said, per The Wrap. “The original Moana film from 2016 recently crossed 1 billion hours streamed on Disney+ and was the most-streamed movie of 2023 on any platform in the U.S.”
The original Moana was directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. It was a big success upon release, earning more than $687 million at the box office. The movie was also nominated for multiple Academy Awards, including Best Animated Film.
Moana 2 will be released in movie theaters on Nov. 27, 2024.
