One of the tightest bromances in Hollywood is between Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, the actors are BFFs. What some fans might not know is that their dynamic duo was once a terrific trio until a falling out got the best of them. Yep, Jake Gyllenhaal reportedly got tired of third wheeling after being brought into the friend group in 2017.

Reynolds and Jackman have been friends for almost two decades after striking up a friendship on X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009. The Deadpool star then added Gyllenhaal to the circle in 2017 after they starred in the 2017 sci-fi film, Life. “The three of them seemed to get along well. At least, at first,” a Life & Style insider divulged. However, there’s a reason they say that three’s a crowd, and the source alleged that “Jake got too competitive” because “he and Ryan were vying for the same roles.”

It left Jackman in an “awkward” position because he was friendly with both of them. At the end of the day though, The Greatest Showman star’s bond with Reynolds was closer. That reportedly left Gyllenhaal feeling left out in the cold, especially since they have Deadpool & Wolverine coming out on July 26. “It’s hard for Jake to watch them promote the film together. He feels snubbed all over again,” they revealed. “Jake may say he’s better off without those guys, but it still bothers him.”

Reynolds and Jackman’s impenetrable friendship has been on display for years with their good-natured ribbing. The Spirited star gave a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Australian actor on June 8, which just happened to be National Best Friends Day. He posted a trailer for their upcoming film and joked in the caption: “I hope everyone gets to work with their best friend at least once in their lifetime. I know I can’t wait to finally do it.” He also added two red heart emojis and the hashtag “BestFriendsDay” just in case anyone didn’t catch his sarcasm.

For Reynolds and Gyllenhaal, it seems like this friendship chapter is over for them — at least for now. “All of their friends chalk up their falling out to show business,” an OK! magazine source noted in 2021. “Ryan and Jake realize that in Hollywood, there are only so many seats at the table.”
