Rory McIlroy proved instrumental in Team Europe’s triumph against Team USA in the 2025 Ryder Cup. The golf star secured three and a half crucial points throughout a thrilling weekend at Bethpage Black.
After Shane Lowry’s decisive putt officially sealed the Ryder Cup for the Europeans, McIlroy even turned to his spouse, Erica Stoll, and declared: “What a year.” The pair then enjoyed an emotional embrace. The 36-year-old completed his career grand slam by capturing the Masters just weeks after he claimed the Players Championship in 2025. The Northern Irishman also kicked off his season with victory at the 2025 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, foreshadowing his subsequent triumphs.
McIlroy teamed up with Tommy Fleetwood to claim points in both the Friday and Saturday morning foursomes against the American pairing of Harris English and Collin Morikawa.
He secured a half result when partnered with Lowry against Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns in the Friday afternoon four-ball, before defeating Justin Thomas and Cameron Young alongside Lowry in the Saturday afternoon four-ball.
Nevertheless, his weekend concluded on a somewhat disappointing personal note, as he fell to a previously winless Scottie Scheffler by a single shot in the Sunday singles, part of a spirited Team USA fightback.
The five-time major champion now boasts six Ryder Cup victories, with merely two runner-up finishes, establishing him as one of the most accomplished European players in the competition’s history. During Team Europe’s post-match press conference, McIlroy faced questions about maintaining composure during crucial moments under pressure.

So you know, as much of it is a cliché of whether it’s one shot at a time, today, honestly, it was like one foot in front of the other.”
The golfer didn’t hold back when reflecting on his clash with Scheffler, confessing: “I felt like I was running on empty today. I gave so much of myself the first two days. I tried as hard as I could out there against Scottie. Scottie and I both didn’t have our best,” he acknowledged. “It was a bit of a pillow fight if I’m honest.”
The tournament wasn’t entirely smooth sailing for McIlroy and his partner, though. Saturday evening saw footage emerge of what seemed to be a spectator hurling a beverage at Stoll. Reports later suggested she was reduced to tears following the shocking incident.
McIlroy addressed the episode during his Sunday press conference. He revealed: “Erica is fine. She’s a very, very strong woman, you know. She handled everything this week with class and poise and dignity like she always has. I love her and we’re going to have a good time celebrating tonight.”
