The teenagers accused of murdering Chloe Watson Dransfield have been pictured for the first time.

Kayla Smith, 18, of Kennerleigh Avenue, Archie Rycroft, 19, of Middleton Park Road, were charged with murder alongside a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons. They all appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning and remanded into custody before their next hearing at the city’s Crown court on Thursday.

During the hearing, Mr Rycroft pleaded not guilty to two charges of burglary and one of theft, relating to separate incidents in March.

The 17-year-old boy pleaded not guilty to a separate charge of burgling a house in August.

Ms Smith is a self-employed beautician who runs a business called Luxe Aesthetics from her grandfather’s home in east Leeds. Wearing a grey tracksuit and leaning back on a wooden bench in a glass-framed dock, she spoke only to confirm her name, address and date of birth during the short hearing.

Chloe, 16, from Gomersal, died after being found with stab wounds in Kennerleigh Avenue, Austhorpe at around 6am on Saturday, March 28. In a statement following her death, her family said: “My beautiful princess Chloe. I cannot put into words how I feel that you are not here with me. You are my life, my world, my best friend and I know that I am yours. I cannot live without you – I need you. You are stunning, confident, loyal, honest and my family-oriented princess. When you walk into any room it lights up with your bubbly personality. There is so much I could say. There’s a big hole in my heart that can never be filled.

“Your two sisters and big brother will always love and miss you to infinity. You will always and forever be in our hearts. Love Mu, Connor, Courtney and Cienna.

“Our family is utterly devastated by the loss of Chloe. We miss every single thing about her. She was beautiful, full of joy, and had a wonderfully cheeky personality.

“She embraced life with such happiness, and she had her whole future ahead of her. Chloe was loved by everyone who knew her, and the absence she leaves behind is immeasurable.

“We will miss her forever, she will never be forgotten. Love you always and forever Dad, Sacha, Reuben, Mia, Amelia, Grandma, Grandad and Uncle Jordan.”

Police are investigating allegations that a jealous argument involving a boy may have sparked the confrontation that left 16-year-old Chloe Watson Dransfield fatally wounded after a party in Leeds. Three suspects have appeared in court on murder charges, as detectives continue to piece together the events of that early Saturday morning.

A witness has claimed that someone shouted the words “He is not her boyfriend” moments before the situation escalated violently, adding weight to reports of a romantic dispute or jealousy as a possible trigger.

Chloe, from Gomersal in Kirklees, was found unconscious with multiple stab wounds, reportedly to her back, on Kennerleigh Avenue in the Austhorpe area of east Leeds shortly before 5:55 a.m. on March 28, 2026. Neighbours, including 64-year-old Wayne Mallows, performed CPR for around 10 minutes while a phone lay on the pavement with ambulance control still speaking on loudspeaker giving instructions. Despite their desperate efforts and those of paramedics, she died a short time later in hospital.

Family Tributes to a “Beautiful Princess”

Chloe’s devastated family has paid heartfelt tributes, remembering her as their “beautiful princess” — a stunning, confident, loyal, honest, and deeply family-oriented girl whose bubbly personality lit up every room. Her mother said: “My beautiful princess Chloe. I cannot put into words how I feel that you are not here with me. You are my life, my world, my best friend… When you walk into any room it lights up with your bubbly personality.” Her father added: “We miss every single thing about her. She was beautiful, full of joy and had a wonderfully cheeky personality.”

She was a pupil at BBG Academy in Birkenshaw and had recently secured a college placement in hair and beauty. A GoFundMe set up by relatives has drawn widespread support to help give her the send-off she deserved. Chloe leaves behind two younger sisters, Courtney and Cienna, and a brother, Connor.

Court Appearances

On Tuesday, March 31, Kayla Smith, 18, a self-employed beautician from Kennerleigh Avenue, Archie Rycroft, 19, from Middleton Park Road, and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Leeds Magistrates’ Court charged jointly with Chloe’s murder. They wore grey prison-issued tracksuits, and family members in the public gallery were visibly emotional, with some sobbing during the hearing.

Smith and Rycroft were remanded into custody, while the 17-year-old was placed in secure accommodation. Their next hearing is scheduled at Leeds Crown Court on Thursday, April 2. An 18-year-old man remains in custody on suspicion of murder, while two others (an 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy) have been released on bail.

The Alleged Romantic Dispute

Family members and locals have repeatedly described the tragedy as stemming from tensions that had been building for days among a group of teenagers, reportedly after a house party that got “out of hand.” Chloe’s cousin, Shantelle Watson, said her “whole life was taken in a flash over a boy.”

According to witness accounts, the confrontation escalated sharply when someone shouted “He is not her boyfriend,” suggesting jealousy or a romantic rivalry was at the centre of the dispute. Chloe was said to have sent a desperate message to a friend asking to be picked up shortly before the attack. Neighbours reported that the argument outside a house had been building for nearly 10 minutes before she collapsed on the pavement.

West Yorkshire Police have not officially confirmed the precise motive, but detectives are examining the full timeline, group dynamics, any possible alcohol or drugs at the gathering, and how a personal disagreement could spiral into lethal violence so quickly.

Shock in a Suburban Street

Kennerleigh Avenue is a quiet residential street lined with bungalows, largely home to older residents and not typically associated with serious violence. Floral tributes soon appeared at the scene, with messages such as “Rest easy my Chloe. Love you forever my crazy girl.” Chloe’s school has arranged counselling for students who knew her as a “funny, vibrant girl” since primary school.

The case has sent shockwaves through Austhorpe, Gomersal, and the wider Yorkshire community. It has also reignited national conversations about youth knife crime, peer pressure, social media-fueled tensions, and how romantic jealousy or group loyalties among teenagers can escalate with tragic consequences — even in suburban areas.

Investigation Ongoing

Led by Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle, West Yorkshire Police continue to appeal for doorbell, dashcam, or mobile phone footage from the area in the early hours of March 28. Anyone with information is urged to come forward via the Major Incident Public Portal.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

For Chloe’s family, the pain remains raw. One relative described her as an “innocent beautiful soul taken too soon,” leaving a hole in their hearts that “can never be filled.” She was a daughter, sister, and friend full of plans and dreams — college, a career in beauty, and a life surrounded by the family she cherished.

Whether the root cause was a jealous argument clarified by the shout “He is not her boyfriend,” or a more complex mix of emotions and group dynamics, the outcome is the same: a vibrant young life cut short in moments of chaos.

Chloe Watson Dransfield’s bubbly spirit and loving heart will not be forgotten. As the legal process moves forward to Leeds Crown Court, the community mourns a girl whose light was extinguished far too soon.

Rest in peace, Chloe. đź’”
