Ever since Netflix’s Forever came to a dramatic close, fans have been clamouring for another season — and now there’s been a very positive update on this front.

That’s right, folks: the series has been officially renewed for a second season.

Season 1, which is an adaptation of Judy Blume’s 1975 novel Forever, tracks the love story between Keisha (Lovie Simone) and Justin (Michael Cooper Jr) as they explore the awkward territory of being each other’s “firsts” in life.

“What resonates is the rite of passage: Taking all that you have learned up to whatever age and having your first choice of love outside that very safe place of familial love is very significant,” said showrunner Mara Brock Akil (via Tudum).

“The first time you have sex, your first kiss, the first time you say ‘I love you’ — it resonated then, and it resonates now.”

If you’re wondering when there are plans to continue exploring that subject matter beyond the first eight episodes, read on for everything you we know about Forever season 2 on Netflix.

It’s unclear when Forever season 2 could materialise given that filming is yet to kick off, and we wouldn’t expect it to arrive until 2026 at least.

The season 2 renewal was announced during Netflix’s Upfront presentation on Wednesday (14th May).

“This show was never just about first love — it was about being seen. About letting teenagers be soft, complicated and real,” Akil shared in a statement about the show.

“And the world showed up for that. Season 2 is our love letter back to the people who said, ‘Yes, this is for me. ‘ We’re honoured, we’re excited, and we’re ready to go even deeper. Thank you to Netflix – season 2 coming soon!”

Speaking recently to Entertainment Weekly ahead of the season 2 renewal, Akil noted that there’s “absolutely room” for more episodes.

“There’s absolutely room for that. In this art form, I don’t make it for myself. I’m making it for an audience. I believe that the audience wants character-driven, complex love stories. If the audience wants more, I want more. Let’s go do it,” she said.

Who could return for Forever season 2?

This is Keisha and Justin’s story, so we’d expect to see Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr reprise their roles.

Talking to US Weekly, Simone recently said she’d be “interested” in playing her character again.

“I would love to see what she turns into. I would love to see what she would teach me,” she noted. “[But] I liked that ending also because even if it’s not the end forever, it was a very mature stopping point for the both of them.

“I feel like they were in places in their lives where they said, ‘Hey, maybe this is not going to be helpful for the things that I have to consider and do for myself in this portion of my life.'”

The rest of the season 1 cast included:

Karen Pittman as Dawn
Wood Harris as Eric
Marvin Lawrence Winans III as Jaden
Xosha Roquemore as Shelly
Barry Shabaka Henley as George
Ali Gallo as Chloe
Niles Fitch as Darius
Paigion Walker as Tiffany
Adriyan Rae as Brittany
Xavier Mills as Christian
E’myri Crutchfield as Tammy

And, of course, there’s also the potential for some new cast additions.

What could happen in Forever season 2? Plot speculation

At the end of season 1, Keisha and Justin are on very different paths. She’s heading off to Howard University, while he’s taking a year out from North Weston to work on his music.

But season 2 is unlikely to leave them both living separate lives, which means showrunner Mara Brock Akil is likely to pen more episodes that bring them back together once more.

But how their relationship will develop remains to be seen.

Could the narrative jump forwards a number of years? And might that mean new actors taking on the roles of Keisha and Justin as they navigate their late 20s or beyond?

Is there a trailer for a potential Forever season 2?

Not yet, as filming is yet to kick off on season 2. Trailers usually arrive in the month leading up to the premiere.
