Ashley Park stars as Mindy in the Netflix series Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris has become one of the most popular shows on Netflix. When Season Three premiered with 10 episodes in December, fans ecstatically binge-watched as their favorite characters Emily Cooper, Mindy Chen, Gabriel, Camille, Alfie, and Sylvie worked on their personal and professional relationships.

While there are not any (serious) complaints from fans about character development or dialogue, there seems to be a running theme that has been present since Season Two that has divided fans. That theme is how much singing Mindy, played by Ashley Park does on the show. And while it cannot be denied that Park has a beautiful singing voice and is able to hold her own on the small screen stage, the performances may have reached a point where they are oversaturating the over-arcing theme of the show. Because of this, viewers are not feeling fully invested in Mindy’s character and even “fast-forwarding her singing bits.” A move that not only interrupts the flow of Emily in Paris but may prove to lose fans in the process.

Here is why fans agree that Ashley Park is a great singer, but they want her performances to stop on Emily in Paris.

Storyline Does Not Advance With Songs In The Show

The reason that Mindy performs the songs she does in Emily in Paris is to help move the storyline along. But at times, the songs appear to miss the mark. And because of this, they feel the opposite is happening when Mindy sings and instead of moving forward, the storyline is stalled.

“The music is always there to move the story forward to underline the themes of the episodes,” Park explained. A fact that is very apparent with some of the song choices performed, such as Shallow in Season Three. But, there are other performances that appear to miss the mark. And fans were not shy to let their opinions be heard.

“Clearly the writers didn’t learn from the criticisms of season 2,” one Reddit user stated. “Ashley Park has a great voice, but the constant songs add nothing to the plot.”

Another user stated, “I like Mindy but they need to use her character better, the singing is frankly obnoxious every episode and I can’t take it anymore. It’s so random.”

“All she does is sing in almost every episode, it feels like filler,” yet another Reddit user added. And because of this, fans of the first season of Emily in Paris are feeling less invested in the show as a whole after Season Three.

Fans Feel That “Two Songs A Season” Would Be Okay

Initially, the character of Mindy was not supposed to be a singer. But after Darren Star, the show’s creator, saw Park perform, that changed. And because of this, he wanted to incorporate her singing talent in every episode.

But the goal was not to make it for singing’s sake. The songs needed to be important to the episode.

“Darren called me after the first table read, and they hadn’t written anything past episode three yet,” Park explained. “He’d seen me in Mean Girls on Broadway and asked if I’d mind if they wrote in some singing for Mindy.”

The conversation moved on from there and Star and Park collectively agreed that they “would want it to be story driven and not just singing for the singing.”

This may have been accomplished in the first season of the show. After all, there were not any complaints about Mindy’s performances until Season Two rolled around and there was singing in every episode.

Fans do not necessarily want the performances to stop entirely, however. Just dial them back a bit so they were something to look forward to rather than knowing they will be a part of every episode.

“One or two songs per season would be fine, but not every single episode,” one Reddit user stated. A second Reddit user stated the same, explaining, “It’s such a weird insert to have in every single episode. Maybe like two songs a season tops..I skip too.”

This is not a reflection on Park’s voice, as fans of the show reiterate. There are just too many performances that feel like afterthoughts to the show that fans are actually worried about what Season Four will bring when Mindy goes to Eurovision.

Singing Takes Up A Good Portion Of The Episode

While the show is called Emily in Paris, the focus is taken off of Emily, played by Lily Collins, quite a bit during the show in order to showcase Mindy and her fledgling singing career. The lack of focus on the main character is one of the complaints that fans have given that episodes are only 30 minutes long.

And it has made fans question just how long episodes would be, were the performances taken out of the show completely.

“The singing in Emily in Paris is way too much and so much filler in an already 30 minute episode,” one Twitter user stated.

Another Twitter user said, “I cannot stand all the constant singing in the new season of Emily in Paris.” But again, it is not Park’s voice that is being attacked. It is just how often it is showcased in the series.

Perhaps there is a happy medium that can be found for the fourth season of Emily in Paris when it comes to how much Mindy performs. Fans will be tuning in to find out. And just maybe, tuning out if they feel inundated by song yet again.
