Jessi Pierce, a beloved NHL reporter, and her three children died in a house fire in Minnesota.
On Saturday, March 21, firefighters responded to a residential structure fire at a single-family home located on the 2100 block of Richard Avenue at around 5:25 a.m. local time, according to the White Bear Lake Fire Department.
After neighbors reported seeing fire coming through the roof of the house, noting that there were likely people inside, crews found a fully involved structure fire upon arrival.
Firefighters immediately began fire suppression efforts and were able to locate an adult, three children and a dog inside the house. Unfortunately, the White Bear Lake Fire Department confirmed that all were deceased.

“Our hearts ache for all those involved in this tragedy,” Fire Chief Greg Peterson wrote in a news release. “We ask for the opportunity to allow our community to come together and support one another during this difficult time.”
Shortly after the incident, the NHL confirmed that Pierce, who was a contributor to NHL.com for the past 10 seasons, as well as a co-host of the Bardown Beauties podcast, had died in the fire alongside her three children — Hudson, Cayden and Avery.
“The entire National Hockey League family sends our prayers and deepest condolences to the Pierce family on the passing of Jessi Pierce and her three young children,” the NHL said in a statement. “Jessi loved our game and was a valued member of the NHL.com team for a decade. We will miss her terribly.”
Bill Price, editor-in-chief of NHL.com, also remembered Pierce as “an absolute joy to talk to and work with.”

“The entire NHL.com team is devastated and heartbroken by the loss of Jessi and her children,” he said. “Jessi’s love of her family and hockey was evident in the energy and passion she brought to her work for us. She will be deeply missed.”
After graduating from Iowa State University, the late journalist pursued her dream of becoming an NHL writer by working for the Minnesota Wild and going on to have her work featured in countless publications, including USA Hockey, The Athletic and the Minnesota Hockey Journal.
“The Minnesota Wild organization is heartbroken by the tragic loss of Jessi Pierce and her children,” the Wild said in a statement. “Jessi was a kind, compassionate person who cared deeply about her family and those around her. She served as a dedicated ambassador for the game of hockey during her time covering the Wild and the NHL.”
Michael Russo, a reporter for The Athletic, paid tribute to Pierce on social media while sending condolences to her husband, Mike.
“Jessi Pierce (Hinrichs) was the most vibrant person — the life of the party, always with a smile on her face, always bringing a passion to every article and podcast and interview she did,” he wrote on X. “Jessi simply loved covering the Wild and hockey throughout Minnesota and had a way of brightening everyone’s day with her upbeat, bubbly personality. I have literally NEVER met anybody that had a way of being EVERYBODY’s friend.”
A mainstream report has spotlighted a key timeline detail in the devastating White Bear Lake house fire that killed NHL reporter Jessi Pierce and her three young children on March 21, 2026, prompting renewed scrutiny and emotional discussions across the Minnesota hockey community. According to the coverage, Jessi’s husband Mike Hinrichs was not present at the scene when firefighters arrived around 5:30 a.m., while Jessi’s phone was reportedly still sitting untouched on the kitchen counter—details that are now fueling online speculation about the exact sequence of events in the family’s final minutes.
This latest piece of the puzzle is spreading rapidly through Facebook groups, Reddit threads, X conversations, and local sports forums. One widely shared post captured the growing buzz: “Mainstream report confirms Mike Hinrichs was absent when firefighters got there, but Jessi’s phone was still on the kitchen counter. Why didn’t she grab it or call for help? The timeline is raising so many questions.” Comments poured in with heartbreak and curiosity: “He was out of town, so she was alone with the kids… that phone sitting there with the unsent draft at 5:19 a.m. feels even heavier now.” Others linked it directly to the accumulating rumors: the six-word unsent message on her smoke-covered screen, the stove switch allegedly left on low despite her reputation as an extremely careful mother, the blurry doorbell camera movement at 5:23 a.m. with shifting hallway lights, the 3-word text from Mike shortly before the blaze, and the strange text she reportedly received days earlier.
The fire broke out in the family’s single-family home on the 2100 block of Richard Avenue in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Neighbors called 911 after spotting flames coming through the roof. When fire crews arrived, the structure was already fully involved. Inside, responders tragically discovered Jessi Pierce, 37, her children Hudson (8), Cayden (6), and Avery (4), and the family dog—all deceased, with smoke inhalation believed to be the primary cause of death. Mike Hinrichs, who was away on a work-related trip at the time, was not on scene when emergency personnel reached the home, a fact now being highlighted in reports as part of the official timeline reconstruction.
In the rumor-filled corners of the internet, this detail is being woven into a minute-by-minute narrative that feels increasingly haunting. People online are reconstructing the sequence: Mike sends a brief 3-word text from out of town… Jessi possibly responds or tries to type her own six-word draft at 5:19 a.m.… the doorbell camera allegedly catches blurry movement and changing hallway lights at 5:23 a.m.… then, within minutes, smoke engulfs the house. Yet her phone remains on the kitchen counter—untouched and unsent—while Mike is miles away. “Why didn’t she take the phone with her when she got up?” one emotional Facebook comment asked. “Was the smoke already too thick by the time she realized what was happening? That counter detail makes it feel like everything happened so fast she never had a chance.”
Mainstream outlets have reported the absence of the husband at the scene and the general location of the phone without confirming every rumored element, focusing instead on the ongoing investigation by the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office. No official cause has been released, and there is still no public indication of arson or foul play. Officials continue to examine physical evidence, call records, device data, and the reported doorbell footage. The stove detail—allegedly found on a low setting—remains part of the whispers, as does the strange pre-fire text and the data recovery efforts on Jessi’s phone.
Jessi Pierce was a cherished voice in the “State of Hockey.” As a dedicated reporter for NHL.com covering the Minnesota Wild, co-host of the Bardown Beauties podcast, and a warm presence in press boxes across the league, she brought passion, humor, and professionalism to her work. Friends and colleagues described her as the ultimate multitasker: fierce journalist by night, devoted mom by day. She was known for her meticulous habits—always checking the stove and appliances before bed, creating a safe and loving environment for Hudson, Cayden, and Avery. Tributes from the Minnesota Wild, the NHL, players, and fans have poured in, calling her a joy and a bright light whose energy lit up every room she entered.
The reported phone-on-the-counter detail, combined with Mike’s absence, has struck a deep chord because it underscores the suddenness and isolation of the tragedy. In an era when smartphones are extensions of ourselves, the image of the device left behind—screen still showing that unsent draft beneath a layer of gray smoke—feels profoundly intimate and tragic. Online discussions now blend grief with practical questions about fire safety: how quickly smoke can incapacitate even the most vigilant parent, why working smoke detectors sometimes aren’t enough if people are already asleep or disoriented, and the importance of having a family escape plan that includes grabbing a phone if possible.
As investigators continue piecing together the timeline—including call data, the husband’s 3-word text, the strange incoming message from days earlier, and any anomalies in the recovered phone data—the community mourns deeply. A GoFundMe supporting Mike Hinrichs has seen an outpouring of donations for funeral expenses and family support. Flowers, hockey jerseys, stuffed animals, and notes continue to accumulate at makeshift memorials near the burned home, turning the quiet suburban street into a place of collective sorrow.
Skeptics in the comments urge patience, reminding everyone that many details evolve or get clarified as the official investigation progresses. What seems suspicious or inexplicable in the heat of rumor often turns out to be a heartbreaking but ordinary sequence once all facts are known. Still, the internet’s instinct to connect every fragment—the strange text, the stove, the hallway lights, the husband’s message, the phone on the counter—reflects a very human need to find order in chaos.
Whatever the final report ultimately reveals about the cause of the fire (electrical, appliance-related, or otherwise), the loss remains the same: four vibrant lives taken far too soon. Jessi Pierce’s legacy as a passionate journalist, loving mother, and kind colleague endures in every shared story and tribute. Her children’s laughter, though silenced, echoes in the memories of those who knew the family.
In kitchens and group chats across Minnesota and the broader hockey world, people continue to discuss the timeline, question the “what ifs,” and hold space for the unimaginable grief of a husband returning home to ashes. The phone left on the counter has become a symbol of seconds that mattered—ordinary moments interrupted by an invisible killer that moved faster than anyone could react.
The whispers and speculation may quiet once the State Fire Marshal releases more definitive findings. But for now, this key timeline detail keeps the conversation alive, reminding everyone of the fragility of life and the enduring power of community in the face of tragedy. Jessi’s light—though dimmed by smoke and flames—continues to burn brightly in the hearts of those she touched, a testament to a life lived with passion, care, and love.
