A recent study concludes that dogs are the most relaxed while watching Netflix’s Bridgerton and cannot sit still during episodes of The Witcher.
Netflix’s Bridgerton, besides being a hit among humans, apparently has a relaxing effect on dogs, according to a recent study.
In research conducted by Betway Insider, pet owners were asked to attach a FitBark device to record their dogs’ activity patterns during episodes of different TV shows. As learned in the experiment, dogs rested an average of 37 minutes for every hour of Bridgerton. The period drama came in first as the best series to relax pooches garnering an average sleep score per hour of 90%. Following closely behind were Friends (88%) and Rick and Morty (85%). On the other hand, owners noticed their dogs behaved anxiously during episodes of The Witcher and, ironically enough, Pup Academy. In fact, the latter — a live-action Disney Channel series about the titular dog school — evoked an exceptionally high amount of canine concern, earning 149 on the anxiety score, well above the baseline average of 88.
Shows and Music That Affect Dogs
The experiment also tested dogs’ anxiety levels while listening to various genres of music. Folk music dominated the category, with one dog resting for the entire hour. Jazz and pop shortly followed folk at an average of 42 minutes and 41 minutes of rest, respectively. Meanwhile, the research found that heavy metal resulted in only 25 minutes of inactivity and hip hop came in second to last with 27 minutes.
Based on Julia Quinn’s book series, the dog-preferred offering Bridgerton follows several young members of London’s high society during the Regency era’s social season. While there’s no specific reason cited for the show’s calming effect on canines, it does feature two pet Pomeranians, named Phoebe and Mercury, who belong to the extravagant Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel). Whether their presence contributes to this phenomenon is anyone’s guess.
Bridgerton Loses Its Stars
At the time of its December 2020 premiere, Bridgerton became the most-viewed English-language series on Netflix within the first 28 days of its release on the streaming platform with 625 million hours watched. However, the series underwent some casting changes since its inception. Most notably, Regé-Jean Page, who played Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, left the Netflix show after Season 1, having assumed its status as a limited series. Despite his departure, Netflix offered Page $50,000 an episode to star in three to five episodes of Season 2. The sophomore season adapts the events of the novel The Viscount Who Loved Me and closely follows Daphne’s brother Anthony. However, The Gray Man actor turned down the opportunity.
In addition to Page, Phoebe Dynevor revealed that she would not return as Daphne in Season 3. “Sadly not in season three,” Dynevor said. “Potentially in the future. But in season three, I’m just excited to watch as a viewer.” The show’s third season focuses on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), Daphne’s brother, and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan). Unlike Bridgerton‘s previous seasons, the recent installment does not follow the order of Quinn’s novels. Originally, the third book centered on Benedict Bridgerton, while the fourth book concentrates on Colin and Penelope.
Bridgerton is available to stream on Netflix. There is no current release date for Season 3.
