Twins Amelia and Sean McCann are both now at uni
It’s been over 18 years since Madeleine McCann went missing on a family holiday in Portugal. Her story has remained in the spotlight ever since. Just last month, Channel 4 released a new documentary called Madeleine McCann: The Unseen Evidence. And now, police have launched a fresh search in Portugal near a site linked to their main suspect.
While the investigation continues, many people are wondering what life looks like for Madeleine’s family today, her parents, Kate and Gerry, and her younger twin siblings, Sean and Amelie.
Here’s where they all are now.
Kate McCann is back working in healthcare

Kate, now 57, was a GP when Madeleine disappeared. She left her job after the tragedy to care for her twins and focus on the search. In 2011, she wrote a book called Madeleine, sharing how deeply the loss affected her and her marriage.
In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kate returned to the NHS, helping in Leicester hospitals. Today, she works with people with dementia and is also an ambassador for the charity Missing People.
She and Gerry still live in their family home in Rothley, Leicestershire.
Gerry McCann is still a heart doctor and professor

Gerry, also 57, has continued his work in medicine. He’s now a professor at the University of Leicester, specialising in heart research and MRI. He’s involved in major projects on heart disease and holds several leading roles in his field.
Kate and Gerry have always tried to raise their twins with a sense of normal life. “They have to be independent,” Gerry once said. “What happened to us is incredibly rare.”
Amelie McCann is now 20 and studying at university
Amelie, Madeleine’s younger sister, is 20 now and studying at university in the north of England, reportedly at Durham. She’s sporty, social, and has competed in cross country and triathlons.
In 2023, she spoke publicly for the first time at a vigil marking 16 years since Madeleine disappeared. She lit a candle for her sister and joined others in reading messages like “never, never give up.”
Sean McCann is also 20 and a top swimmer

Sean, Amelie’s twin, has made waves as a freestyle swimmer. He represented Scotland at the 2023 Youth Commonwealth Games and is part of the National Open Water Squad. He trains at Loughborough University and is studying chemical engineering.
There’s even talk he could swim for Team GB at the 2028 Olympics. Sean started competing at age eight and still trains early most mornings.
Despite everything, the McCann family says they’re grateful to “live a relatively normal and enjoyable life now”.
