Netflix’s season 2 renewal for its breakout drama series Untamed sounds promising, but it also raises concerns about another Western series that debuted earlier this year. Untamed has become one of the most-viewed new Netflix shows of 2025 after generating 24.6 million views in its first week alone.

Untamed was renewed for season 2 by Netflix despite being initially labeled as a limited series. The creator of Untamed, Mark L. Smith, has another Netflix show that released this year as a limited series, with speculation brewing that it could spark a second season. However, American Primeval still hasn’t been renewed for season 2 following its January 2025 release, which is not a great sign for that particular Smith show.

Since Smith and Netflix appear to be putting most of their time in focus into capitalizing on Untamed season 1’s success, it feels as though, at this point, American Primeval season 2 has been put on the back burner. The buzz about a potential series extension seems to have died down after making waves at the start of this year.

American Primeval season 2 would have worked well either as a continuation of season 1 or as an anthology series.

American Primeval season 2 would have worked well either as a continuation of season 1 or as an anthology series. Given that it’s a historical drama, the series could have bounced around to different times in American history, and battles for territory and wealth occurred all around the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries.

While this growth strategy doesn’t appear to be comepletly off the table, especially since American Primeval director Peter Berg has expressed that he would be open to working on the project again, Untamed’s massive streaming success on Netflix has made it a greater priority.

American Primeval was celebrated for its immersive storytelling that employed extreme yet powerful forms of violence to depict the authentic brutality of the American frontier in a pre-Civil War America. It also featured an exceptional cast, including Taylor Kitsch, Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, and Shea Whigham.

There would be an avenue for American Primeval to pick up where season 1 left off, with Gilpin’s Sara Rowell heading to the Golden Coast in California. She would realistically arrive in the late 1850s on the heels of the Gold Rush, which would certainly be a fascinating setting for American Primeval to continue in.

While a second season of Untamed could realistically be released in 2026, it could be that Netflix, Smith, and Berg are waiting for the right time for American Primeval season 2. Even though the buzz has died down in recent months, the series still has potential and isn’t dead yet.
