Steve Jobs unveiled the iMac G3 on August 15, 1998, 26-years-ago today, and it was designed as Apple’s new consumer-oriented computer that would easily connect to the internet. This computer broke away from the traditional desktop PC design, as its design was based around a cathode-ray tube display, with the G3 processor, components, and connectivity all included in a single enclosure.

The iMac G3 was designed by Jony Ive and his team to be a teardrop-shaped computer enclosed in a translucent plastic case that ditched serial ports and floppy disk drives in favor of CD-ROMs as well as USB ports. Journalists didn’t appreciate the lack of legacy technology, but despite their scathing reviews, the iMac was an immediate commercial success, becoming Apple’s fastest-selling computer.
