Early Virgin River Season 8 Scoop: When It Will Premiere, Who’s Not Returning, Who’s Joining the Show and Which Couple Is In Trouble

Virgin River’s very dramatic seventh season came to a close with so many twists — multiple departures! a birth! a surprise ex! a life-and-death cliffhanger! — that the wait for next season is going to be especially torturous. But thankfully, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith shared some juicy teasers with Soaps.com about what’s to come to help tide fans over during the hiatus.

Read on as we review everything we know about the Netflix drama’s return, including when you can get eyes on it, who is and isn’t coming back, and how big of a time-jump the show will take next season.

When does Season 8 premiere?

Filming on the new episodes begins in April 2026, so unfortunately, it will be a while before the season premieres on Netflix. The wait time between the previous two seasons was 15 months, so you can likely expect a similarly long break between the most recent season (which dropped in March 2026) and the show’s return.

Who’s not coming back?

Longtime cast member Marco Grazzini, who has played Detective Mike Valenzuela since Season 2, will not return. During the seventh season, Mike and Brie’s relationship came to an end as the two of them worked to find Charmaine and solve Calvin’s murder. With those storylines resolved, “I think we struggled a little bit post-love triangle to find an organic place for Mike to pivot,” Smith explained to Soaps.com. “He’d come to Virgin River to take Calvin out. We started the season with Calvin being killed and out of the picture. He spends the season kind of reconciling his relationship with Brie until they can come to a place where they both feel at peace with each other and the decision of them not being together. So we felt like his character — for at least this section of the series — has sort of run his course.”

When the show resumes with Season 8, “we’ll understand that [Mike] moved back to LA,” where his new romantic interest, Victoria (Sara Canning) lives, Smith revealed.

Likewise, Lauren Hammersley, who played Charmaine, will not be back in Season 8 now that her arc has wrapped up. In addition to saying goodbye to Mike, Charmaine and Victoria, Smith confirmed that “there are no plans to have [Marley] back in Season 8,” following Mel and Jack’s adoption of her baby.

Who is coming back?

Of the new characters introduced during Season 8, fans can expect to see more of Austin Nichols as Mel’s ex-boyfriend, Dr. Eli Kelly, who served with her in Nurses Beyond Borders. Now, he’s set to operate on Mel and Jack’s newborn son, and “shake things up a little bit in Virgin River,” Smith teased.

“We were so excited to get Austin for the role,” Smith said, “and also, just to create a character from Mel’s romantic history, which, for the most part, it’s only been Mark that we’ve known about as her deceased husband. So of course, she dated other men. Of course, they can find their way into her life and, her and Jack’s lives and maybe relationship.”

Also returning is Jack and Mel’s mysterious farm hire Clay (played by Cody Kearsley), who will continue his quest to find the sister he was separated from in foster care. “We do start the season with him still on that journey, working with Brie more on it,” Smith previewed. “And we’ll also see him around the farm more with Jack, and connecting with Jack more over time.”

Will Brady survive the motorcycle accident?

In the final scenes of Season 7, Brady so blissed out about his reunion with Brie that he got distracted while riding his motorcycle and had to swerve at the last minute to avoid a road crew, leaving his fate in the clutches of a potentially deadly cliffhanger. Smith isn’t spilling whether or not Brady makes it out alive, only promising that the finale twist and “how we explore the outcome of that” is “going to be a big part of Season 8.”

What else is coming up in Season 8?

The new season will pick up with a four-month time-jump, Smith revealed. “A lot of our characters are entering this fresh, new chapter in their lives and their relationships,” he shared. At the same time, “being haunted by your past, a little bit like when you think something’s behind you and it follows you, is a big [theme] for the [next] season,” as is the idea of sacrifice.

For Mel and Jack, becoming parents to a baby with a congenital heart defect “will shape their perspective on everything in life,” Smith said, adding that the intensity of what they went through in the Season 7 finale with their son is not “something that you bounce back from easily.”

Meanwhile, Preacher and Kaia ended Season 7 on a good note, but that might not last for long. “They’re really going to be dealing with some big issues in their relationship, and it’s definitely going to be make or break,” Smith teased. Elsewhere, after finding herself torn between Doc and ex-husband Roland, Hope will start the next season “more from a place of this new sort of self-exploration to get a better sense of who is she despite all these choices that she made along the way, and who does she want to be now.”

Which new characters will be introduced?

“We are planning to have a couple of new additions to the clinic, which will shake up the dynamic there,” Smith revealed. “And we’ll say a family member from one of our characters’ past comes to visit.”
