A ‘thrilling’ horror movie that fans say is ‘not for those looking for cheap thrills’ is streaming on Netflix now.

The title, Cellar Door, was only just added to the streaming giant’s ever changing library from today (February 16). Originally released in cinemas back in 2024, it is now available for subscribers to check out for themselves. According to its synopsis, the story follows a couple looking for a fresh start who get their dream house gifted to them, in the form of a beautiful estate. However, it comes with a mysterious stipulation from the original and wealthy owner.

The one condition they must follow is that they must never open the cellar door. Their curiosity soon tests their marriage and unleashes the house’s dark secrets.

Cellar Door’s cast is lead by Animal Kingdom and Teacup actor Scott Speedman and star of Fast and Furious franchise Jordana Brewster. They are joined by Laurence Fishburne, known for his role as Morpheus in The Matrix movies.

While the film may have received generally mixed reviews from critics there are many fans who share their recommendation, and add that it is worth anyone’s time.

One critic described the film as “a twisty thriller that’s more unsettling than horrifying”. Another noted a point of debate among reviews and fans; the twist ending. They penned: “Cellar Door teases an intriguing thriller with high-quality performances and talented stars, but the end result didn’t quite reach its potential.”

Most fans claim the title is not the usual type of horror that goes for jump scares or gross out violence. Instead there is a stronger focus on trying to psychologically unsettle the audience.

As one viewer argued: “This movie is about the human psyche and is not for those looking for cheap thrills. I thought this was brilliantly executed with the twists and turns as the story unfolded. I felt the love between John and Sera, the betrayal, and the cost of risking everything for the life we’ve always wanted.”

Another added: “This movie truly played with your mind. A movie filled with thrilling twists and turns. Who did what, who said what, and where did they go? I did not expect this movie to be this entertaining. Every 5 minutes there was something thrilling happening. But the ending, I did not expect the ending at all. I don’t want to write any spoilers, but 100% you should see it!”

While someone else claimed: “Love how unusual this is, it is ultimately much more horrific in a more plausible way. Great acting, just watch ready to be surprised. Not a regular horror but I was gripped from the start onwards.”
