Reporters Share ‘Eerie’ Details About Night of Rob Reiner’s Murder: Biggest Revelations From ABC Special

New information and interviews were unearthed regarding the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in The Rob Reiner Story: A Hollywood Tragedy – ABC News Special.

The episode, which aired on Tuesday, December 16, spotlighted the achievements of the director and the photographer before their tragic deaths and the investigation that followed. Their son Nick Reiner was arrested on suspicion of murder after Rob and Michele’s bodies were found in their Brentwood, California, home with stab wounds. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is facing life in prison without parole or the death penalty if convicted.

Corey Feldman was among Rob’s former collaborators who appeared in the special, recalling the moment he found out about the murders.

“All I could think is, ‘Oh my God, there’s no way this could have happened to my friend,’” Feldman said while choking back tears.

Reporters Painted an ‘Eerie’ Scene Around the Reiner Home on Night of Murders

ABC7 anchor Liz Nagy recalled the perplexing scene around the Reiner home after it was first reported two bodies were found inside.

“So the chopper was hovering over this compound in this neighborhood in Brentwood for a good hour or so, and we weren’t seeing a whole lot of activity, which almost seemed eerie given we knew that two bodies were found inside the home,” she said.

The Truth Behind the ‘Cagey’ LAPD News Conference

The Los Angeles Police Department held a press conference outside of the Reiner home on Sunday, December 14, offering little information about the murders.

“It was almost [a] combative news conference with LAPD,” Nagy said, while reporter Trevor Ault called the LAPD “cagey” in their approach to dodging questions.

Reporter Alex Stone said he felt like the lack of information and answers was all a tactic for the LAPD to catch the alleged killer.

“Police were almost kind of coy about what they knew and wouldn’t say that they were looking at Nick Reiner, and it seems that was because they didn’t want to spook him, and they knew who they were going for,” Stone said.

Nick was found in the area near the University of Southern California hours after his parents were murdered. He was taken into police custody and held without bail. Nick appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday, December 17, after the first-degree murder charges were filed wearing a suicide prevention vest. He did not enter a plea and his arraignment was set for January 7, 2026.

Corey Feldman Had Suspicions About Nick Reiner

“It’s the first night of Hanukkah, so I was preparing the candles,” Feldman said of the night of Rob and Michele’s murder. “So as I was literally putting the candles in and getting ready to start the prayers and all of that, I get a text, ‘Oh man, this is at Rob’s house.’”

Feldman said he instantly suspected Nick to be the alleged murderer.

“As we watched the news unfold, I was actually the first one who said, ‘I think it was his son,’” Feldman admitted. “It’s awful. It’s the worst thing I could imagine. … Accepting [the] fact that this could have happened in his home from his own son, it sent shivers and chills down all of us.”

One day after the documentary aired, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed Rob and Michele’s cause of death to be “multiple sharp force injuries.”

Further in the episode, Feldman praised Rob for his directing style, adding, “As a director he built that trust and the way that he did that was like no other director.” The Lost Boys actor also said Rob had a portfolio of accomplishments that “could stand up to his father’s great work.” (Rob was the son of actors Estelle and Carl Reiner, who were also discussed at length in the episode for the inspiration they served to their son.)
