Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found in their Los Angeles home by their daughter, Romy, multiple sources tell PEOPLE.

According to the sources, Rob and Michele were killed by their son, Nick.

Calls about the tragedy first came into the Los Angeles Fire Department at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14. First responders arriving at the home said they found a man and woman dead — and the victims were later identified as Rob and Michele.

Nick, in a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, spoke about his long struggle with drug addiction, which ultimately led to him being homeless at one time.

Nick told PEOPLE that his years of addiction formed the basis for the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote.

Rob was a director, producer and actor who gained fame with his role as Mike on the Norman Lear sitcom All in the Family. As a director, he helmed beloved movies like This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Stand by Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally… (1989), Misery (1990) and A Few Good Men (1992).

He and Michele met when Rob directed When Harry Met Sally, and the couple married in 1989 before having three children.

New details have emerged in the devastating double homicide case of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, where their son Nick is being charged with the murder. After Nick’s first court appearance on Dec. 17, his siblings Romy and Jake Reiner broke their silence on their parents’ tragic deaths.

“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” they shared in a statement to TMZ. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”

The statement continued, “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”

The legendary actor-director’s daughter, Romy Reiner, found her dad’s body, according to reports. The 27-year-old was contacted on Sunday, Dec. 14, by a massage therapist, who had arrived at the Reiners’ $13.5 million Brentwood residence for a scheduled appointment but was unable to get inside. Romy, who lives across the street with a roommate, went to the house to help.

According to The New York Times, Romy arrived and discovered her father’s body before she allegedly “fled” the house. The outlet reports the scene was so traumatic that Romy did not realize her mother, Michele, was also dead inside.

Her roommate immediately called 911, while Romy reached out to her father’s longtime friend, Billy Crystal. It wasn’t until paramedics arrived at the scene that Romy learned the full scope of the tragedy, that her mother had also been killed, the Times reported, citing a source close to the family.

Sources say Romy made the discovery hours before her brother, Nick Reiner, was found by police and arrested near the University of Southern California campus around 9:15 p.m. that same evening. Authorities confirmed Nick was not at the family home when Romy arrived.

Romy is the youngest of Rob and Michele’s three children. The couple also shares sons Nick, 32, and Jake, 34.

On Tuesday, Dec. 16, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that Nick was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, with a special allegation of using a knife. If convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors have not ruled out pursuing the death penalty.

“Prosecuting cases involving family violence are some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching we face because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement. “Rob Reiner was one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation. His murder and his wife of more than 35 years, Michele Singer Reiner’s murder, are shocking and tragic. We owe it to their memory to pursue justice and accountability for the lives that were taken.”
