Wednesday Addams and Thing are back on Netflix as the much-awaited show just dropped today. I can’t wait to go back to Nevermore, vibe to Lady Gaga, and just appreciate the whole saga.
But what I’m most excited about is seeing the castles again. Interestingly, the Nevermore school is actually a real place. It’s Charleville Castle in Ireland, and it has a pretty heartbreaking story behind it.
So, Charleville Castle is in County Offaly. It’s this huge gothic building that fits the creepy vibe of Nevermore Academy perfectly. But the sad bit is that the castle’s history isn’t just spooky, it’s tragic too. The third Earl of Charleville owned it ages ago, and his youngest daughter Harriet died there in a terrible accident.
The castle is actually haunted
‘Wednesday’ Cast Break Down The Show’s Biggest Moments

Well, according to Metro, people say the castle’s been haunted by Harriet’s spirit and other ghostly children. Visitors and those who live there have heard children giggling, voices chatting, and even furniture moving by itself in empty rooms. Bonnie Vance, who helped restore the castle and still lives there, said she has only seen the ghosts “occasionally”, but often hears them. She explained the sounds as “children giggling, voices talking, the scrapping sounds of furniture being moved in rooms that stand empty.” Umm, okay.
There’s even a bedroom that’s famous for having a door that locks itself, which left Bonnie’s son Jonathan a bit uneasy. He’s not really into ghosts but jokes, “My official statement on the ghosts is I don’t believe in them, but I won’t say it loud enough for them to hear me.”
Basically, the story goes that little Harriet, who was just eight, was sent upstairs by her governess to wash her hands before dinner. On her way back down this big, gloomy staircase, she climbed onto the bannister to slide down. The staircase is now known as Harriet’s staircase. Unfortunately, she slipped and fell onto the stone floor below. After that, they put a brass guard on the bannister so no one else could do the same.
But why did the show pick that castle?

via Netflix
Director Tim Burton and the locations team picked Charleville to replace the castle they used in Romania for season one. They also found a nearby estate in County Wicklow that looked just like the Romanian school gates and woodland. Locations manager Maria O’Connor said, “There was a tree in the exact same spot where there was a tree in Romania. It was amazing.”
Also, the Wednesday cast didn’t stay overnight. But the production gifted the castle a fancy chandelier that now hangs over the main staircase.
