Chiefs Announce Important Patrick Mahomes News Amid Season Finale

The Kansas City Chiefs have one more game remaining in their season, but already have an eye toward the future and return of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The two-time league MVP was lost to a season-ending knee injury in Week 15, but has already started the recovery process after undergoing surgery in December. The team announced some important news on Mahomes before Sunday’s season finale, giving some insight into his recovery process and return in the 2026 season.
Chiefs Give Positive Update on Patrick Mahomes
Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy gave some updates on Mahomes this week, avoiding any specific timelines for a return but saying the quarterback is making good progress.
“Obviously, the question is going to be Pat with his knee,” Nagy told reporters this week, via SI.com. “And, again, I never would want to put any type of timeline on him, but I know him way too well. I know how he’s wired, and I feel really good about where he’s at and where he will be.”
Nagy said it’s a major benefit that Mahomes is staying in Kansas City to complete his rehab and able to work with the coaching staff and other quarterbacks — which could be key if he’s not ready to return by the season opener.
“He’ll be out here with us,” Nagy said. “He’ll talk through things. He’ll lead us. But let’s all step our game up a little bit. Let’s all lead a little bit more and make up for it, until he does get back and he is out there physically to make the throws and do the drops and everything again.”
Nagy added that Mahomes will likely attack his rehab with vigor, but said the team will make sure he doesn’t move too quickly and put himself at risk of re-injury.
“Pat, he’s on a different level now, and there’s not many people that are going to rehab back as strong or as quickly as he will,” Nagy said. “But there’s got to be some patience to it, and I think everybody else involved just has to step up a little bit. Us as coaches, too.”
Patrick Mahomes Could Face Big Changes
The Chiefs could undergo some big changes while Mahomes is working his way back to the field. Nagy is seen as a top candidate for a new head coaching job, and NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported that he one of the candidates on the list for the Tennessee Titans as they seek a new head coach.
“Expect a wide-ranging and deliberate head coaching search for the Titans that includes, among others, Mike McCarthy, Matt Nagy, Jeff Hafley, Jesse Minter, Robert Saleh and Chris Shula,” Pelissero shared in a post on X.
Nagy has gotten a big endorsement from head coach Andy Reid, who noted that the team was on pace for a record offensive season before being hit hard by injuries.
“Yeah, phenomenal,” Reid told reporters on Dec. 23. “I mean, we were on a record pace for a bit, as far as statistically. So, he does a nice job there.
“He deserves to be a head football coach in this league. So, that’s exciting for him.”
