The soccer player’s wife was pictured for the first time since he died.

Diogo Jota’s funeral was held on July 5, and heartbreaking images emerged of his emotional wife Rute Cardoso with the coffin.

One photo showed Cardoso, who married Jota just 11 days before he died in a fiery crash with his brother, leaning on the arm of Ruben Neves, a football player for Alhilal Saudi Club and the Portugal National Team, as he helped carry Jota’s coffin. She placed her head toward the coffin.

The funeral photos come after photos emerged of Jota’s grief-stricken parents at his wake. They show Cardoso, who was Jota’s high school sweetheart and the mother of his three kids, breaking down as she was comforted by her sister at his casket.

The photos also show the young wife and the newlywed following the coffin along with the pallbearers. Jota’s wife was in the white shirt; the woman wearing the black shirt is her sister.

Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, both died in the wreck, which occurred in a Lamborghini along a Spanish highway. Spanish police indicated to CNN that they believe the brothers blew a tire, causing the car to crash and taking their lives at the scene.

Jota’s wife was also pictured and captured on video helping to carry his coffin.

It’s not clear which brother was driving, but CNN, per the UK’s PA news agency, reported that speed was being investigated as a factor, although that has not yet been determined.

Diogo Jota’s wife Rute Cardoso is consoled as the coffins of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva are brought into the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in the town of Gondomar near Porto.

Cardoso and Jota both posted a wedding video to their Instagram pages shortly before he died. They were married on June 22.

They also expressed their love for each other in posts of their wedding photos.

Jota’s distraught parents were also seen at the funeral.

Jota posted a photo showing him standing with his new wife on their wedding day. He wrote on Instagram, “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever ♾️”

Cardoso posted a photo showing her in her wedding gown and, now tragically, wrote, “My dream came true 🤍”

A video showed Jota’s wife leaving the funeral home looking distraught.

Photos also showed the wife of Jota’s deceased brother Andre Silva crying behind his casket at the funeral, according to Getty Images. However, Daily Mail reported that it was not clear whether Silva had a wife or girlfriend as he kept his relationships private.

There is another Andre Silva who plays professional soccer and who is married to a model named Maria Rodrigues, which has caused some confusion, but that is not the Silva who died. The second Silva posted a tribute to Jota’s brother on Instagram.

According to the Record, Jota and his new wife also attended a wedding together over the weekend, and Jota was headed back to the UK, but an injury had necessitated that he drive instead of fly. The funeral occurred in Portugal.
