The new movie Deadpool & Wolverine is filled with many surprise cameos, and a good chunk of them were from Marvel movies that were made before the establishment of the MCU. That had filmmaker Kevin Smith thinking his good pal Ben Affleck would be making a cameo is Daredevil, leaving the Clerks director “shocked” when that didn’t happen.

To promote his new film, The 4:30 Movie, Smith discussed how surprised he was by the absence of Affleck in Daredevil & Wolverine in an interview with People. Technically, archival footage is used to briefly depict Affleck’s Daredevil in an after-credits montage, but he didn’t make an actual cameo appearance. Smith regaled how he was fully expecting to see Daredevil joining Jennifer Garner’s Elektra in the film, so confident it would happen he saw the casting as a “shoo-in.”

I was shocked that he didn’t pop up in Deadpool & Wolverine,” Smith explained. “I thought he was a shoo-in.”

Kevin Smith Would Do an MCU Cameo for Free

Smith also confirmed that he would be happy to do any kind of cameo himself in the MCU if Marvel Studios were to give him the call. The Mallrats helmer noted how he’d do the cameo for free, as it would admittedly be great for his “brand,” though he pointed out how MCU movies like Deadpool & Wolverine wouldn’t necessarily enjoy the same benefit of bringing in Smith for an appearance.

“They wouldn’t have to f—ing pay me. I’d pay them!” Smith exclaimed. “That’d be amazing. That’d be good for the brand, as they say. Not for them — they need no help whatsoever. They seem to be having a great weekend.”

Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in movie theaters, where, as Smith suggested, the film has been absolutely obliterating the box office.
