In some ways, Wednesday season 2 has expanded the Addams Family tree a bit. Aside from bringing back Uncle Fester, the Netflix show introduced Grandmama Frump, who serves as Morticia’s mother and mortuary extraordinaire, much to the delight of Wednesday. Season 2 also explains what happened to Morticia’s sister, Ophelia. However, the new episodes reveal a sad truth about family dynamics.
Wednesday Season 2 Acknowledges How Much The Addams Family Treat Thing & Lurch Like Servants

Dating back to The Addams Family comic strip origins in 1938, Lurch has been depicted as the intimidatingly tall butler. Other than a subtle recast with Lurch in Wednesday season 2, not much has changed with Lurch as a character. Though Lurch follows his butler duties, he’s not the only character who is treated like a servant; Thing also doesn’t get the same family love he deserves.
Despite being a disembodied hand, Thing has proven to be a useful ally for Wednesday and her investigations while accompanying her at Nevermore. Their special bond was proven when Wednesday cried over Thing’s near-death in season 1, which was the only time she got emotional in the show. Still, the fact that the entire family forgot Thing’s birthday shows that he’s still not properly seen as a family member.
Thing Is Still A Far More Fleshed Out Character In Wednesday Than Other Addams Family Adaptations

While Thing deserves to be treated as a vital member of the Addams Family, Wednesday season 2 at least shows some characters feeling remorse for forgetting his birthday. Gomez even hires a manicurist to make it up to him. Interestingly, it’s actually Enid who continuously treats Thing with the most respect, and she even ends up saving him after being dropped by the crow.
Why Tim Burton Should Helm a Munsters Reboot After Wednesday Season 2
Considering Wednesday season 2 keeps fleshing out Thing’s story by keeping him involved with the core plot, it’s odd that the Netflix show hasn’t attempted to do the same with Lurch. The long-time character has received different backstories in the past depending on the project, but it would be fun to learn more about the character and his connection to the family outside his servant duties.
